@TP-Link Thank you for your reply. I am aware that VLAN tagging is not required (having the Deco devices in AP mode) to isolate the Guest Wifi network from the main network. I can confirm that access of the Guest Wifi devices is limited to the gateway, but that is not my point.

I want to be able to fully separate the Guest Wifi devices by means of a VLAN, so that I can route, filter, assign DHCP IP addresses, etc. separately from the main network. I hope this explain why I would like to have the Guest Wifi network on a tagged VLAN.

How in the world can a world-wide company that makes wireless access points not understand the concept of segregating guest and home networks, using segregated VLANs to do so, and passing that information to upstream switches, routers, and firewalls? If you are speaking in an official capacity for TP-Link, then the company's position on this issue is downright astounding. Because there has been no movement on this issue, I have been seriously considering replacing the Deco M9+ units at my rental property for APs that have the capability of doing this. If TP-Link doesn't plan on addressing this need, don't expect me to advise those who seek my opinion on home networking solutions to recommend TP-Link in the future.

@TP-Link

Technically Is all said why it would be very nice to have the tagging for the guest network,  to handle it by downstream equipment properly. In fact it would be nice to have both networks tagged and be able to select the tagging numbers.

Further it would be nice to remove also the SSID from guest network.

In case of the question: the user case is a normal modern household, in which you should run three separated networks: guest, household and IoT devices.

Hello @TP-Link,

I'm going to give you a practical use case.
I use Deco in AP Mode because I want only one DHCP server on my LAN, and because I need some wired devices to be on the same LAN as some wirelessly connected ones. Also, I of course don't want all the traffic of my LAN to go through the Ethernet port of a single AP.

I have a DNS cache on my LAN, that is assigned as a DNS server to all the DHCP clients of my LAN.

As 802.1q can't be enabled on the Deco AP, I can't assign different subnets to the Guests and Trust WLANs, therefore I can't assign 2 SSID different DHCP option setups.

So my guest WLAN is currently unusable, as DNS server is unreachable from it.

I (shouldn't I rather say "we" ?) really don't understand why TP-Link is so reluctant to make this long time awaited feature available.

Regards,

@TP-Link_Deco we are still in demand for the VLAN tagging in AP mode for the Deco devices. It would be greatly appreciated if you can help us with it.

@tt75 I also would like to see a "Real" guest VLAN for my IoT devices - this is expected in a modern day router

Found this thread just after another query to TP-Link Deco. Is this on the roadmap?

@TP-Link As many have asked and clarified on your forums over the past three years, VLAN tagging is a simple, yet very effective method of customising the connectivity to guest clients downstream.

You already have it implemented for Router mode in the Deco M5. There's no reason to not introduce it also for the guest WiFi in AP mode. In fact, it would be great if you allow VLAN tagging for both main and guest networks.

Your products are not basic, low quality devices. They come at a higher price bracket and this is a basic feature that would at most take a month for your dev team to switch on, test and release new firmware to support across the M5, M9 and other units in this device family.

Please consider this. I'd hate to sell my units and move over to other brands. As it is, I cannot recommend Deco's for people outfitting their homes and wanting proper control and segregation of main and guest networks via VLAN tagging.

Thank you
