Archer C7 V5 - CPU Load jumping to 90-100% for no reason, connection problems, Low WiFi bandwidth
Hello,
I constantly have problems with my Archer C7. The CPU load shown in the UI of the router repeatedly jumps to 90-100%, then back to 2-5%, back to 40-60%, back down, repeat...
These 90-100% jumps are also bound to some connection issues.
Also, my Archer C7 never put through the 1300 Mbps through 5 Ghz. It maxes out at ~220 Mbps most of the time. My adapter would allow for 866 Mbps, so I'd at least think it would get at least up to 500 Mbps from my 1 Gbps internet connection.
The Internet port on the Network Page shows 1000 Mbps full duplex, so it shouldn't be a problem of the cable. Testing my Internet speed to the box from Vodafone (set to bridge mode) also shows 1 Gbps consistently. I feel like the CPU jumps are causing not only the connection timeouts, but are also responsible for the low Mbps throughput in the 5 Ghz topology.
Maybe someone can help me with this problem? :)

Hello, please help verify some details and we will try to figure it out soon:
1. How many LAN devices connected to the router most of the time, especially when the CPU jumped to 90%-100%? Were some devices downloading large files or playing games?
2. What is the model number of this wireless adapter which 866 Mbps 5G connection? How about the negotiation speed when it connected to the router 5G? Please verify it by referring to the instruction: https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/2265/
3. Besides, you can refer to the instruction below to narrow down the issue:
What should I do if internet speed is slow when the device is connected to the TP-Link router?

Sorry for the late reply, I was travelling the past days.
1) No LAN Devices at all. Only the WAN Port is pluged with a Cable from the "Vodafone Box" to actually get a internet connection. It did not matter if someone played any games, or downloaded large files. When I played Rocket League for example, I saw the same jumps in the same ratio as if I would go through Google.
2)
This is basically an example for 4 different WLAN adapter/cards used. This one being the slowest with the shown 780 Mbps (Intel Wireless AC 9560 160Mhz). But my external Realtek WLAN Adapter shows similar, just with 866 Mbps (a Adapter with a Realtek Chipset). Still, only the explained 200 Mbps of the actual 1 Gbps Internet connection are coming through at max. Some weeks ago I actually was able to get ~300-400 Mbps, but back then I didn't notice any spikes with the CPU for example either.
3)
The Negotiation Speed shows 1000 Mbps full duplex for the WAN port.
Using an CAT 5e cable also results in a Negotiation Speed of 1000 Mbps full duplex.
^ Doing the Speedtest with the Ethernet cable, leading to the same outcome.
^ This one is with the WLAN Adapter (any basically)

@Solla-topee I have the same behaviour on my ARcher C7 V5, I get this jittery ping that jumps out of <1ms while in low CPU Load and goes to 300ms or more when it reaches 99% This is extremely annoying and it does that with or without devices connected, doing nothing but receiving internet. This makes the device practically unusable.
Did the team you escalated this to find a solution?
I am on FW: 1.1.0 Build 20201120 rel.50406(5553)
No printer, no USB, nothing weird going on.

@Solla-topee Exact same problem CPU load jumps to 100%. Let us know what is the status on this issues. Thanks!

May I have the detailed network diagram, how is the Archer C7 connected to the network, is it working as the main router?
Please show us the screenshot of CPU jumping to 100% issue, and how many devices connected to the router at that time. Were some devices downloading large files or playing games, or any other high load activities?
Please ensure the Archer C7 is running the latest firmware, you can reset it to factory defaults, then reconfigure it from scratch, then monitor again.
If the issue persists, try to disable the NAT Boost under Advanced -> System Tools -> System Parameters page.

I have same symptoms:
- CPU Load jumps from ~2-4% to 100% every couple of seconds regardless of network traffic or amount of devices connected
- Constant connectivity drops on 2.4GHz access point (5GHz connection seems fine)
- Slow wireless speed.
I do have the same symptoms as above, but my individual problem is due to router 'overheating', mine is set up in a relatively confined area with poor ventilation, taking it out of that space or fanning in some air helps cool it down - my CPU load hiccups on a router are gone. Looks like CPU throttling.
I have never had this problem with routers of different models over the years, this is the 1st one that sits in the same spot and overheats.
And it is not really that hot' - the case is pretty warm to the touch but it's definitely not 'burning hot'.
I'll probably take it apart and see if I can add some active cooling to it. Too bad, there is no temperature output on the router's system page.
Again, it's possible this is not the same problem as others having.

I added a noctua fan under the router to cool it - no issues now.

We have to know more details about the issue you are experiencing, then we can see how to get it resolved.
1. Please provide the detailed network diagram, how is the Archer C7 connected to the network, is it working as the main router?
2. Please show us the screenshot of CPU jumping to 100% issue, and how many devices connected to the router at that time. Were some devices downloading large files or playing games, or any other high load activities?
3. Please ensure the Archer C7 is running the latest firmware, you can reset it to factory defaults, then reconfigure it from scratch, then monitor again.
4. If the issue persists, try to disable the NAT Boost under Advanced -> System Tools -> System Parameters page.
5. Please feel the router to see it is hot, put it in a well-ventilated location or mount it vertically on a stand that permits the free flow of air, and use a fan to cool the router, a regular fan or USB fan is fine.
