Archer C2300 Slow VPN server speeds
Hi!
I bought an Archer C2300 to replace an old 1043ND router.
Everything seemed to work well until I set-up the OpenVPN server functionality. While it works and I can connect from outside to my network, I do so with terrifyingly slow speeds. No matter from where I connect (4G mobile network, dedicated business line with 500Mbps link, etc) I only get about 9-10 Mbps download and 2,5-3Mbps Upload.
The router has a fiberoptic link with 250Mbps/150Mbps link. Everything else works fine, I get 200Mbs speeds on wifi 5Ghz when at home and all the connected devices get very good speeds.
What's more worrying is that I took the old 1043N, installed DDWRT and configured OpenVPN server on it, and I get speeds of 15Mbps/15Mbps constantly. I ran these tests for almost a week with the same results. How is it possible that a single core 720 Mhz old router outperforms a dual core 1.8Ghz one? I tried both UDP and TCP as this is about the extent of configuration I am allowed by the interface.
During these tests, the C2300 1st CPU got to about 35% and the 2nd to about 60%.
The 1043ND got to 70% at the most.
What am I missing here?
Anyone has any idea what I can do to get some reasonable speeds out of this router? I am stuck with it (as I have been stupid enough not to test the VPN before the return period expired).
The firmware has been updated to the latest version.
Thanks!
Best regards,
Harry
