do I spend money sending it back to Amazon or just fetch a lump hammer to it

You will waist your money send it back, hold it and hope there is a new FW in future.
meanwhile use it as AP or use Bridge mode to repeat.

Looking at this thread specifically for BRIDGE mode.

I have updated the firmware however still cannot get it to work.

Region : UnitedKingdom

Model : TL-WR702N

Hardware Version : V1

Firmware Version : TL-WR702N_V1_131211

ISP : BT

My main router identifies it and I can access the TP-link page via the dedicated IP.

When I search for wireless connections it picks it up, however when I connect it tells me 'limited' connection which I believe is not properly connecting to my main router. I have checked and re-checked the network settings within the TP-Link config menu but cant figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dudes,

had observed same issue as described here from various users. As some mention IP issue I looked at my local set up again and did a few changes. Since then the router is working now fine for almost 2 days. Before I had the hanging up issue every now and then. I did following changes. I run WR702 on latest fw as repeater for a base station.
On base station - limit dhcp IP range to have a IP range explicitly for WR702N . This was to avoid dhcp confict as base station runs also dhcp. E.g. base station 192.168.0.20-192.168.0.199 and WR702N 192.168.0.200 - 192.168.0.220
- assign a static IP to WR702N on base station based on WR702N MAC

On WR702N
Assign in section NETWORK/LAN static IP to router, same IP you give it on base station.
in dhcp section enable dhcp and set up the IP range that you allocated for it. Also configure standard gateway and dns server with base station IP.

Not sure if fw has bug but since I did above changes router seems to run stable. Maybe he will teach me wrong soon. I will report on if that's the case. Good luck

Bridge Mode should not require changes to base router

I'm using a 702N with the latest (December 2013 beta) fw update applied. It is a little more stable, but it still doesn't work in bridge mode for more than a few hours without needing to be restarted. That's at home, where I have full control and access to everything. I have yet to make it work with a hotel network (that has a login screen).

Some of the work-arounds presented in this thread are clever, but don't forget that the 702 is sold as a TRAVEL router, which means that it needs to work without being able to make changes to the router you are repeating or bridging to.
