Hi,
I have a WR1043ND
Firmware Version:
3.13.12 Build 120405 Rel.33996n
Hardware Version:
WR1043ND v1 00000000
I tried to connect a WD MyBook Essential 3tb hdd NTFS, but it never recognized it. Of course, I connected it with the external power supply.
With a 15gb pendrive FAT32 it works OK.
Any clue? The user manual say that NFTS *is* supported.
Thanks in advance!

I think 3tb is the problem. this router won't be able to recognize the USB drive if the partition size is over 2TB

Thanks for the reply, Andrew.
I shrinked the disk. Now it only have one 1.5tb partition, but still not recognizing it :(
I also tried with a pendrive formatted in NTFS and it works OK, so NTFS issue is discarded.
Any other suggestions?

Still not working :(
What a disappointment... I thought that this router + external HDD = NAS... I shouldn't bought it without a little of research...
If anyone knows how to make it work (alternative firmware / tweak / etc), please post here.
Thanks!

I have the exact same problem. Same router, except mine is a 1.8 and same external HDD except mine is a 4TB WD My Book. Does not detect drive at all even after shrinking partition to under 2TB.
Please TP-Link or anyone help! This was one of the reasons for purchasing this router.

Here are the answers from TP-LINK support. This is what the router can support.
Solutions to Some USB Devices Cannot be Recognized by Routers with USB Ports
1. Routers with USB Ports provide less than 500mA power supply on the USB port. Please check your HDD Drive. It will not work correctly if your HDD Drive needs a power supply more than 500mA.
2. Currently, system files like FAT/FAT32/NTFS are supported by Routers with USB Ports
3. It can only be read when the hardware encryption of the hard disk is disabled.

Thanks for the answer, cora
1) It's powered by external power supply
2) Is NTFS
3) Hardware encryption is disable
I only bought it for the NAS feature and doesn't work... this router is a scam.

Seems it's true.
I have Seagate 3TB. After I shrinked partition to 2TB router see it as "volume1 1863.0 GB"
But I waste 33% disk capacity. It'a a pity.
I think we need new firmware (last update was 2012/4/5).
TP-Link support, can you hear us?

Failed to detect Buffalo 3TB External HDD
2013-02-02 23:01:28
I had the same issue with my Buffalo 3TB NTFS External HDD (with ext. power). I re-created a new partition with only 2048GB (2TB) and left the rest of 1TB unallocated, also disabled the power-safe option. However, the router couldn't detect it at all... When the HDD was plugged in, the USB lighted up for a while, then it's off   . Has anyone successfully detected a Buffalo Ext. HDD on this router?
