TD-W9970 VDSL modem/router LAN4/WAN port question

Hi, I have a question about the LAN4/WAN port in TD-W9970 VDSL modem/router.
I am getting VDSL Internet service, and I am plugging in a phone cord into the TD-W9970's DSL port.
But I notice that, in its default Modem/Router mode setting, there seems to be an unknown bridge-type WAN connection in the Network->WAN page, in addtion to my VDSL connection, and this connection seems related to LAN4 port.
If I delete this bridge-type WAN connection, then LAN4 port will not work as a regular LAN port. If add back this connection, then LAN4 port will work.
Can someone tell me why?
Why cannot TP-Link simply hard-wire LAN4 port as a regular LAN port in the Modem/Router mode?
