Introduction

Charge Guard [BETA] stops the power output of the Tapo smart plug once the connected device is estimated to be fully charged. This helps reduce battery aging and prolong battery life of the electronic device.

Setup Charge Guard

1. Go to smart plug's Device Settings > Charge Guard, enable Charge Guard.

2. Custom Power & Custom Time: Set the power threshold and duration. The plug will automatically turn off when the charging power remains below xx W for xx min.

Typically, the charging rate of electronic devices slows down over time. Therefore, in order to avoid early shutdown before the device is fully charged, or early suspension of charging before the desired battery capacity is reached, it is necessary to observe the power changes and duration of the device while charging. Take an iPhone 15 for instance, when the battery is charged to 90%, the power drops to around 7W. After 20 minutes, power drops to 2W. Then in another 10 minutes, reaching full charge.

Recommend Settings*

  • For mobile phones/tablets: 2W - 30min
  • For laptops: 2W - 60min
  • For smart watches/headphones: 1W - 50min

*The data is sourced from our laboratory tests, and actual results may vary between different types and models of devices.

Important Notes

1. Charge Guard is less suitable for low-power devices like toothbrushes, which have minimal charging power and no marked decrease in power during charging. This feature might prevent these devices from achieving a full charge.

2. Many factors can affect charging speed, including ambient temperature, charger quality, cable condition, and whether the device is in use. The recommended settings are for reference only.

3. This feature cannot precisely limit the battery level. If you want to limit the charging capacity to further extend battery life, you can enable the "Optimized BatteryCharging" feature available on your mobile phone (the name and functionality may vary by brand).

4. Even when the device's Ul interface shows the battery fully charged, the battery may still be in a low-power charging state to optimize battery saturation. This state usually lasts for about half an hour.

@Wayne-TP I have my home theater setup over P110. When the system is in stand by it uses 28 watt and when it is running it uses around 130 watts, so basically I want it to automatically turn off after 10  minutes of putting on stand by

  @Wayne-TP

similar request, can the Smart charging threshold be set to much higher, for example when charging a Dewalt 18v battery it will charge to 80% at 91w, it will then charge to 100% at 51w, finally going to <1w.

i would like to have the charging stop at 80% to preserve the battery life, however the maximum 20w threshold is way too low.

This automation is a potentially great feature if you could just make the threshold 2000w maximum to give people flexibility to adapt for their specific scenario?

Agree. I have my device consuming around 40W in standby mode. Actually, how about avoid limiting standy power in the application? I believe it would be the best option- having presets for popular devices + an ability to manually specify any standby power user needs

@Wayne-TP I also would very much appreciate a higher Watt setting. I'm using the P110 to charge my ebike which is being charged at >130W but as soon as it hits 80% it gradually lowers the Wattage. Currently I use the timer to switch off the plug at around the time the battery hits 80% but being able to set the charge protection to turn off charging when the charging is below 130W would be amazing.

Hi,

Why doesn't  the Tapo plug automatically switch off after the mobile phone is fully charged when using the Charge Guard function?

@Wayne-TP huge +1 on an increase to the upper bound of the custom Charge Guard ranges.

I would like to use this feature as an auto-off feature for my home cinema setup as a backup to when I forget to turn the plug off in the app. While the TV and speakers are on, the socket draws 150-200W, but when TV is turned off (<5W) and the AV unit the speakers are connected to goes into standby, it sits at a constant 55W. The max of 20W is well below this.

The only alternative is automatically turning off after a timer...which is not so smart, as you either have it turning off while you are still using it or it's sitting there drawing power for several hours if you only use it for a few minutes.

My personal understanding of this feature is that it provides "charging" protection for low-power devices, such as phones, which is why there is a maximum power limit of 20W.

Many users here seem to be discussing automation needs triggered by the plug's energy monitoring function. For this request, you can click on the below feature request posts to participate in the discussion and cast your vote.
