Model: Archer AX1800
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.0 Build 20230725 Rel. 56344(4555)

Hello all, I have a few questions on a few bugs with this device.

I've noticed that the router has started to lose the names I have given our WiFi devices, such as 'my ipad' or 'work phone' etc.
The devices are getting renamed to just 'unknown'.
I have tried naming a few to different names but the problem seems to remain for some devices. There are no special characters.
I have upgraded to the latest firmware version but the problem remains.

e.g.:
UNKNOWN
D2-7F-BC-xx-xx-xx
192.168.0.76

This used to be call 'WorkPhone'.

This makes it hard to see genuine devices or whether someone rogue has gained access to the network.

In addition, I've meshed the TP Link RE300 extender, and this also shows a lot of names as 'unknown' even if they show as the correct name in the AX1800.  It is almost as if when they are correctly meshed the RE300 isn't getting the names from the AX1800.

Also on the new firmware, what does this icon mean please?

The orange icon to the left of Chris. Not all devices have this and I've been unable to locate this in any help section.

Again there appears to be a further bug too.  I have both the AX1800 and the RE300 as you know connected in a Mesh network mode.  What I've noticed is that devices on the deny list on the AX1800 seem to be connected via the RE300.

This is posing a security risk since I wanted these devices denied from connecting to the network.  I was under the impression that the RE300 shares the settings from the Mesh via the AX1800.  Should devices denied on the AX1800 be also denied on the RE300?

The picture above shows a device in my deny list on the AX1800 yet this device seems to be allowed to connect via the RE300.

Any help gratefully received.

Cheers,

Chris

Support have come back to report with an answer on one of the below questions, so for future reference:

"Also on the new firmware, what does this icon mean please?"

image.png

"The orange icon to the left of Chris means the owner or manager of the Router or RE. If you see that on the Router web page, then it's the owner of the Router, similar to RE situation. Owner and manager are concepts related to TP-Link ID. I suppose you have one."

I am not entirely sure how this happens since I do not remember assign this device as an owner or manager and I had also signed in to the AX1800 portal via an entirely different machine.

The mystery continues.

  @Plantman2000

I have the AX1800 V1.2 and noticed it primarily on the Tether app then going to the IP address and it being different, it's nothing that really bothered me but i too noticed it.  It's just little things like that this should have not even been broached during the discussion of what we need to address on the next patch!  How about just stable service, i'd LOVE the ability to turn off an antenna and redirecting that to the the others or even just push it out to to one that's directed at the furthest point of the house.  whatever.  well, hope your issue is resolved

one point is your ipad and phone may have a setting that changes the MAC address as a secirity feature which will cause the names to be lost. It is in the wifi settings on your ipad called private wifi address. If you turn it off you may get warnings which is okay when you are on your own network. .

  @ArcherC8

Thanks, yes I did think of that, but checking the devices we have it looks like a different device that are connecting.  Especially since when checking against the MAC database some are bizarre chipsets such as IOTs devices.

Might be time to change the WIFI password again anyway.

  @Plantman2000

I like to have the names on all my devices so I know what is connected. I also have a wyze cam that changed the MAC address and no way to set it back. Some posts say to power off for a bit but no go. At some point I may get it down and reinstall the firmware to see if that sets it back.

  @Plantman2000

In addition with the latest firmware we no longer seem to be able to set an icon against a WiFi device like we could before.  The picture below seems to auto populate the device...but only some have done this. The Majority are just a circle with the three dots.

0f406e0371004ed0b6d716a9390ae205

It has even got some incorrectly too, so an Android device was incorrectly labeled as an Apple device.

Is there a way to get this feature back?

PS: I've had to break the Mesh network between the AX1800 and the RE300 since the devices on the deny list of the AX1800 were not copying over to the RE300....so devices I had blocked on the main router were just simply connecting to the RE300!

So with the Mesh separated I now have two deny lists to populate but at least I can have control on denying devices correctly.
