Firmware Version:

The docking station is near a carpetted area. I have marked it on the map and set the cleaning preference to "vacuum only".

When the mop accessory is attached, the robot complains about "restricted area" when starting a cleaning routine.

Is it because of the mop attachment? I thought the robot would just stop spraying water when over a carpet, and not it would stop itself from going over the carpet at all.

Can anyone explain the behaviour?

Generally, when the mop mount is attached, the robot vacuum will avoid carpet areas or cross them quickly if unavoidable.

What's the "complaints" are you referring to? Is it a certain voice prompt? Is your carpet area right next to the charging dock?
