Hi,

 

I set up 2 x EAP245v3 with Omada Controller 3.2.1 today, and have been facing some issues with connectivity. In particular, accessing iCloud services from an iPhone and a MacBook Pro. Examples of how the issue manifests:

- Messages in iCloud (iMessage) doesn't sync

- iCloud.com background loads, but has a spinning indicator and doesn't show the login screen

- Logging into iMessage doesn't work

- While making Facetime Audio calls on my iPhone, the wifi connection drops (despite standing next to the wifi AP) and falls back to 3G/4G.

- Unable to update apps from the App Store

- Unable to access apple.com

- Unable to ping icloud.com

 

In all cases, after switching to the mobile (4G) connection, the above services/interactions work without a problem.

While all of this is occurring, internet connectivity otherwise isn't affected (e.g. SpeedTest works).

The router configuration also hasn't changed since yesterday.

This has also been exhibited across both APs.

Both EAPs are powered by 802.3af PoE switch (HiLook NS-0109P-58)

 

Controller config:

- 2.4 and 5GHz networks have the same name

- band steering enabled

- airtime fairness disabled

- fast roaming, dual-band 11k report and force-disassociation all enabled (though I disabled them and it didn't make a difference)

 

Has anyone encountered this before? Or something like it? It's... bizarre.

Compare the behavior of the apps when connected directly to the router. Does it work then? If not, the failures might be caused by restrictive firewall settings on the router. The EAPs don't block ports needed for iCloud etc.. Ports which need to be open on your router on egress for iCloud services are TCP ports 25, 80, 443, 587, 993 and 5253.

@R1D2 Thanks for the quick reply! In response:

- I didn't define any ACLs in the Controller

- No change to the firewall settings on the router. I only disabled the wifi AP.

- I connected to a wifi network (different SSID) created by the router and everything worked.

Now this is weird. After switching back to the SSID broadcast by the EAPs, iCloud.com and Apple.com now work. I am thoroughly confused by this.

Ah, great. Maybe it was caching in the browser or something weird.

@R1D2 So something similar happened again. No changes to the wifi networks in the interim. 
 

on a FaceTime audio call, and I notice that the wifi drops. I try again and the wifi drops again. 
 

Before initiating the call, if I enable a VPN (in this case, windscribe), the FaceTime audio call doesn't drop. 
 

Any ideas? Could this be related to the amount of traffic generated by a client, leading to the AP disassociating it?

Hi @JeremyHiggs, what do you mean with »WiFi drops«? Does the client lose WiFi connection to the EAP completely? Or do you mean the audio stream has packet loss?

@R1D2 the phone appears to be no longer connected to the wifi network, as the signal indicator in the status bar changes to 3G/LTE.

This is normal behavior of any phone if the WiFi signal's quality drops below a certain watermark (about -80dBm).

 

Just turn off mobile data and try again. Expect packet losses if the WiFi signal is too weak - then only a re-configuration of your WiFi network can help.

@R1D2 I would hardly expect signal strength to be an issue while standing next to the AP! It also doesn't happen with other audio/video software, such as Zoom, and also does not happen if a VPN connection is active. So it must be something else.

The decision to switch to 3G/LTE is made by the iPhone. If you don't experience such switch-overs with Zoom software or over a VPN, then there is some other cause forcing this switch-over. I have no iPhone, but on my Neffos running Android I can decide for every App if it should switch over to 3G/LTE when the 3G/LTE signal is more powerful/has better quality than the WiFi signal.

 

Just disable mobile data or try to set FaceTime to only use WiFi if possible. If this works flawlessly then, it's not the EAP. If it does not work flawlessly despite standing beside the EAP, then the problem is with the EAP's WiFi signal. But in the latter case connectivity problems also should happen with Zoom software or over a VPN, too.
