eap620 vlan tagging

eap620 vlan tagging

Model: EAP620 HD
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 3

After some advice / user experience, after buying Deco X10 units for my home to replace an EAP225 set-up, as the TP-Link site says they support vlans but neglects to mention that they don't in AP mode. The WiFi coverage is great though.

I'm looking for an alternative solution and the EAP620 looks to give me the WiFi6 and coverage of the Decos but as it an Omada product I assume like my old eap225 unit I used to have it would also work in:

1) a 2 unit roaming setup to cover my whole house and replicate the Decos coverage and performance (I can install and run the Omada controller software, or may treat myself to a hardware controller).

2) supports tagged vlans and multiple SSIDs, allowing a vlan isolated guest and IOT network, via trunking the untagged main network and these 2 additional networks with tagging.

3) while I can sort the controller can this also be configured at the device like on the eap225, or are you forced to use the Omada controller. As do not want yet another cloud solution where I'm dependent on a 3rd party such as TP-Link to access my solution.

Any user confirmation that this is possible would be appreciated, as the description on the tp-link website due to the above does not fill me with confidence.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Paul

Hi  @Paped

1) a 2 unit roaming setup to cover my whole house and replicate the Decos coverage and performance

>>>To use fast roaming, we need Omada controller, a software Omada controller is ok.

2) supports tagged vlans and multiple SSIDs, allowing a vlan isolated guest and IOT network, via trunking the untagged main network and these 2 additional networks with tagging.

>>>Omada controller is not a must to configure VLAN. EAP will keep the VLAN tags from the incoming traffic.

Below is the page of VLAN config on EAP's standalone interface:

And you can also have a look on the emulator of EAP.

Side question: do you need to networks be in different IP subnets? like the situation in this link.

3) while I can sort the controller can this also be configured at the device like on the eap225, or are you forced to use the Omada controller.

>>>Omada controller is not a must. And even with Omada controller, you can disable the cloud access.

@Vincent-TP - thank you for the responses much appreciated.

Re your side question, yes the vlans will use different subnets and DHCP servers but that is all controlled by my router. The eaps just need to be vlan aware to accept the trunked vlans from the router and assign vlan X to SSID X and so on.

I have 3 vlans of:

Vlan 1 default and untagged goes to my main SSID, part of the LAN

Vlan 3 guest connects to guest SSID, straight to internet no local network access allowed

Vlan 500 IOT connects to hidden IOT SSID, as guest vlan but has some rules allowing access from the LAN / main SSID for features and management.

So looking at you responses and link that should be fine and back to how my old eap worked.
