  @TimH83

Maybe because KASA defines the switch as LIGHT switch Homekit obeys the definition of a Light.  If KASA on defined/declared it as a switch the we would be free to set it up as a ceiling fan.

  @KASA-matter

I don't disagree, but see thread above. Kasa rep said it's the matter tech and apple. Recently got feedback from Apple saying it's Kasa who controls this. Here's hoping for some updates....

  @Riley_S just following back up. Any updates with your developer team based on what Apple has told us? Looks like Kasa is in control on this fix.

  @TimH83 Thanks for starting this thread! I just got a few KS205 switches and I was dismayed I can't change the display as type in the Home app. I see a lot of finger pointing between TP-Link and Apple about whose fault this is. It's actually quite simple, it's TP-Link's. See below:

The Home app sees these switches as lights because that's how TP-Link is advertising them on the network. Specifically, Matter devices advertise themselves on the network using mDNS. These advertisements are sent as "_matterc._udp." mDNS service names.  In these advertisements there's a device type value,  which the KS205 switches set to 0x0100 (256 in decimal). Per the Matter specification, device type 0x0100 is a "On/Off Light". This is shown in table 3 of the 24-27351-005_Matter-1.4-Device-Library-Specification.pdf on page 35. This is why we can't change the "display as", the KS205 is announcing itself as a light, not a switch.

I belive the correct device type is 0x0103 (259 in decimal) which the Matter specification defines as "On/Off Light Switch". The difference is subtle, but important. This looks like a software bug in the TP-Link implementation on these switches. Hopefully they can fix it sooner rather than later.

Don't take my word for it though, you can check this yourself. I'm using the Discovery app on my Macbook to show all the mDNS devices on the network. You can get it from the app store. There's also an iOS version, though I haven't tried that one myself. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/discovery-dns-sd-browser/id1381004916?mt=12

Run the app, look under the _matterc._udp service name. Expand out the entries you see there. Ultimately you'll see a bunch of different values listed under each device, one of which is the "DT=256". Unless I'm super duper mistaken, this is the device type field, and it's set to 256 (0x0100 in hex).

Lastly, this particular device type goes all the way back to Matter 1.0. So this isn't a case of Matter 1.4 having new device types that aren't supported by these switches.

@Riley_S Any chance we could get some more developer eyes on this? This looks like a bug in the TP-Link implementation.

  @network_orange

This is AWESOME thank you for the detailed resarch, admittedly this is far above my head, but from what limited knowledge I have this makes a lot of sense. TP link needs to solve for this for sure. @Riley_S has been ghosting me, not sure if there is another TP Link Admin that can be tagged in? Please feel free to keep following up too, this should be an easy fix as I understand the bug...

@network_orange

FYI - I filed a ticket directly with TP-Link, referencing your content and this community thread. Looks like @Riley_S might be AFK, so hopefully we get more traction. Here's the incident number that I submitted just incase: TKID250111876.

  @Riley_S Following. Any chance we could get some insight into whether this could be addressed in a firmware update? Just picked up 3 of these switches to replace my problematic Koogeek HomeKit switches.

As @network_orange had mentioned, On/Off Light Switch does seem to be part of the Matter spec. These switches seem to be implemented as a bulb/other specific light product.

Would love to be able to swap a couple of these to fan, if possible.

@InferredMagic

Thanks for joining the thread, the more uses that report this issue and push for a resolution the better

I just emailed TP Support (support.usa@tp-link.com) for an update on the issue that I filed directlly with them: [TKID250111876].

Mabye we'll get more traction if you email them too?

Here's also the link to their live chat support, not sure if this will help too:

https://www.tp-link.com/support/contact-technical-support/#LiveChat-Support

Might be worth a shot. Seems like Riley has abandoned this chat. But I will for sure keep the commuity updated if I hear anyting back.

  @TimH83 I appreciate the information! I'll shoot them an email now as well. The more noise, the better!

I'll also update the thread if I hear any updates.

Fingers crossed!
