Model: RE220
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I've got a garage about 150 feet from my home with a coaxial cable connecting them.  I have been unable to get a consistent wifi signal from the house to the garage; it's just a bridge too far.  I've tried more power, I've tried directional items - I think it may be that the paint / construction of the garage just makes this infeasible.  In any event, I'm not trying to get a signal *through* the wall any longer, I need a different approach.

So I got a pair of coax to Cat5/RJ-45 adapters (powered).  I have one RE220 serving as a wireless adapter inside the house; it is set up so that it is not broadcasting any access point signal.  The connection to the coaxial is fine, and in the garage, the coaxial device has signal.  So far, so good.

The moment I plug the RE220 in the *garage* into the coax adapter - and it's set to be a network extender - everything (literally, every device) in the house goes haywire.  If it's plugged into the wall - in other words, on and functioning - everything is still fine.  But the moment there's a wired connection available, we're up the creek.  The machine that is literally 15 feet from my wireless access point - that works perfectly fine and has for years - all of a sudden begins to lose wireless connectivity; a continuous ping to an internet host drops nearly 50% of the packets.

OneMesh is off because that made the situation worse in my tests.  The RE220's appear to be configured correctly, but there's no "documentation" about how to properly set an RE220 as a wireless adapter.  All firmware is up to date.

I'm befuddled.  Ideas?

Hi  @gnu69

Welcome to the community.

The first RE225 (inside the house): Is it configured in Range Extender Mode or Access Point Mode?

If I understand your topology correctly, it is highly likely that the second RE225 is creating a network loop, leading to network storms and packet/connection loss.

If you are attempting to effectively establish a point-to-point connection, you may want to consider one of our wireless bridge kits - assuming you have a clear enough line of sight between the house and the garage: Omada Wireless Bridge 5 GHz 867 Mbps Long-Range Indoor/Outdoor Access Point

The kit establishes one unit to send and the other to receive the signal in a line-of-sight outdoor configuration. Then, you can run Ethernet cables from each unit into the respective buildings (one into the house, the other into the garage) to establish Ethernet connectivity between the two locations. Then, using the Ethernet connection at the Garage location, you can connect an indoor Access Point device to provide Wi-Fi connectivity inside the garage.

The RE220 inside the house is set in range extender mode, and it is only connecting to the 2.4GHz network; given that there wasn't an option for "network adapter", and I didn't want it broadcasting any type of access point-type data, that seemed the best approach. The extended network for both 2.4 and 5GHz are not enabled on that device. It may be that what I need to do is replace the garage RE220 with an actual access point and set it up as a completely different wireless network. I concur on the network loop. What I am essentially attempting to do is utilize the coax wired connection in place of any type of wireless connection, because wireless to the garage is unstable.

To make sure we're saying the same thing:

I have an AX1500 - wireless to an RE220 that should be a network adapter - wired to an RE220 via RJ-45 - which should be rebroadcasting the same wireless networks that the AX1500 is advertising.  It is, essentially, a wired relay.  Now, I had this sporadically working using wireless, but it was unstable, which is why we're now using wire between the RE220's.

Okay, returning both RE220 units and trying a non-TP-Link solution.  Thank you for your time.

Thanks for the clarification!

I can definitely appreciate the ingenuity of that setup, and your goal with it.

The RE220 in the Garage should support the option to configure it in Access Point Mode if you haven't already configured it as such. This would allow you to test whether or not your current setup would work with a dedicated AP in the garage.

Instructions on how to set up your RE220 in AP Mode can be found here.
