I have an external harddrive connected to my routers usb port and I'm able to share it's contents fine. However it's powered always on and I feel mild activity going on the HDD, even after performing safely remove from usb settings (but still connected to the usb port).

Does this affect life of the HDD ?

Is there a way to power off and on the hard drive ?
