I have a c2300 router and I am on "Smart Connect", however; the 5ghz band always drops off about a minute after a reboot.  I have put a few devices within 6 inches of the router and still they only connect to 2.4ghz.   For reference my network has 16 wireless devices and every single one of them are on 2.4ghz.  In fact, using wifi analyzers there is no broadcast of the 5ghz band at all - despite the TPLink tether app (and web broswer) saying that it is enabled, and the LED light on the router saying it is active too.

I don't understand why ithe 5ghz band isn't visible to wifi analyzers and no devices are capable of connecting to it when in "smart connect".  It is only visible with wifi analyzers for a short time (a minute or two) after I do a clean reboot.

With that said, if I enable ONLY the 5ghz band (ie. disable smart connect and 2.4 ghz) devices do connect fine.  The 5ghz band does not seem to drop in this instance, as I have been connected for hours at a time.

 

For reference, when doing speed tests on the 5ghz band (when it is the only band broadcasted) I get 120+ mbps.  Using the same device in the same location using the 2.4ghz band I get about 50 mbps, which is less than half.  So this begs the question, why won't smart connect even broadcast the 5 ghz band or change my devices to a faster band to get the best connection?  It certainly feels like a glitch in my opinion based on the firmware.

Why is this occuring? Has anyone else experienced this?  Is this just a glitch with the firmware, or do I have a faulty unit?

Note - I am well versed in networking too, and work in IT.

 

For visual reference, here are pictures of the Tether app to show that both bands are configured (SSID = The Cottage Lounge) as well as WIFI analyzers.  The Wifi analyzer is able to see the 2.4ghz band, but it is not visible in 5ghz.  The wifi analyzer can only pick-up my neighbors 5ghz band (ie. Bell809)

What is the hardware verison of your C2300 and what is the Firmware version you are running?

seems like pretty similar problem

 

tried to check which channel is for 5GHz by disabling Smart Connect and put Auto Channel and found out N/A

I live in the middle of forest with nothing to interference, not a single SSID found around here except mine

 

 

2.4GHz works perfectly fine, it's pretty strange behavior on my router

Same problem on the 2.4Ghz band on a new Archer A10 AC2600 : the 2.4Ghz band always drops off about a minute after a reboot.

My previous Archer A9 AC1900 was working correctly with Smart Connect.

I disable Smart Connect and my router is now working like a usual router. I don't know if Smart Connect is really a great feature for my home (many devices)... What do you think about this feature?

I'm seeing a similar problem with my newly acquired AX6000.

 

The difference is that my 5G is still functional but I cannot access the 5G settings at all on on the router through the web interface, only the 2.4GHz settings. Actually you cannot even tell which radio settings you are looking at. See screenshot

 

When I use the Tether app, I can see the both 2.4 and 5GHz settings. I can also connect to 5GHz radio.

 

I'm on v1.0.6

I am having the same issue.  It is as if the 5ghz radio in my second device has died

 This device is configured as an Access Point on the same network as Router #1.
 Smart Connect is turned on.  For the first 2 days both 2.4 and 5.1 ghz were available.  After that device began freezing up, after re-booting it it would come up and start freezing up after a few hours.  Rebooted the entire network including device #1 and all switches in the network.  It stayed up for a few hours and then froze.  After that, the 5.1 ghz radio on device #2 never appeared again.  Even after turning off Smart Connect, forcing specific frequencies and channels, rebooting, only the 2.4 ghz radio appears.  After 4 or 5 reboot/flush attempts, the 5.1 ghz radio on this device does not come online.

I have the exact same problem with the AX6000, WIthout smart Connect i can connect with +200Mbit on 5Ghz, with Smart connect at the same spot, it connects/prefer 2,4Ghz and max out on about 95Mbit... WTF...
