Hi all,

I just bought and set up the Archer AXE95 router. I am very impressed with the range it has for devices several rooms away.

The question I have is the 2.4ghz band. I understand that the router connects devices to the fastest band, being 5ghz. Does the 2.4ghz band ever get used? Is there a way to assign devices to specific bands? I am not sure if there's a setting for this but in an older router, I was able to do this.

I've been monitoring the UI and I have yet to see any device on the 2.4ghz band, especially devices from upstairs or farthest ones out. As I mentioned, the range is impressive and that could be a feature and reason why none of my devices are ever present on the 2.4ghz band. I also have an extender connected, which seems like I don't even need it.

Do you have Smart Connect enabled? If not then you are using separate SSIDs for each band and devices will only connect to the 2.4GHz if they are physically assigned the SSID. If you are then devices will connect to 2.4GHz if they are outside of the range of 5GHz, cannot connect to 5GHz or if the 5GHz is being taxed and their load is minimal. Then, through load balancing, devices would be assigned to 2.4GHz

@Carl Thanks for your response. I do have Smart Connect on. So it is 1 SSID in use. This is sort of different, based on your answer. I have some devices that are not at full strength (have full bars) under the 5ghz band, but would likely be under the 2.4ghz band. If the connection is solid for all devices, then I guess I shouldn't worry.

Okay, in that case, you should be able to log into the router and look at the client list. It should tell you which band each client is connected to. With Smart Connect the choice is really determined by the router but also by the client's capabilities. For instance, most IoT devices are 2.4GHz only so they would only connect to the 2.4GHz band. You shouldn't have anything to worry about, unless there are devices not connecting. If that is the case then we have a concern we defiantly need to address.
