It seems safe to assume that the 4 port model I have is obviously a switch but are the single port ones also? I was having network problems until I rearranged the singleton adapter on the other end to go directly into the router instead of first through an 8 port switch. If the singletons internally are switches then that would explain it since after too many switch hops one will start losing packets.

What were the models of the powerline devices you are working with?

The 4010s do not acquire an IP address so data is not jumping from one router to another, they act more like relays or hubs.
