Firmware Version: 1.3.3 Build 250228 Rel.56467n

Hi All,

I am writing to report a serious and ongoing issue with my Tapo C510W Wi-Fi camera that is consistently going offline. I purchased this camera for approximately Rs.3799/- and it has not been reliably functioning as expected.

The primary symptom is that the camera frequently loses its Wi-Fi connection and the LED turns amber/orange, indicating a lack of internet connectivity. This happens after a few hours of operation, rendering the camera unusable for its intended purpose of continuous surveillance.

I have already contacted customer support and followed their initial suggestion to adjust the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi channel on my main router (Airtel Xstream). However, my router did not allow for manual channel adjustments.

To troubleshoot further, I took the following steps:

 * Secondary TP-Link Archer Router: I connected a TP-Link Archer router wirelessly to my Airtel Xstream router and specifically set the 2.4 GHz channel to 11 with both 20 GHz and 40 GHz bandwidth options. The Tapo C510W still experienced the same offline issue.

 * Dedicated Airtel Airfiber Router: As a more drastic measure, I purchased a separate Airtel Airfiber router and connected only the Tapo C510W to this network. Initially, after powering the camera off and on, it connected successfully. However, after a few hours, it again went offline with the amber/orange LED. I even tried manually setting the 2.4 GHz channel to 11 on the Airfiber router with the bandwidth set to "auto" (which should allow 20/40 GHz) and also tried setting it to 20 GHz only, but the problem persists.

It's important to note that I also own a Tapo C210 camera which operates flawlessly on any internet connection, regardless of the 2.4 GHz band settings. This leads me to believe that the issue is specific to the Tapo C510W model.

The Tapo C510W is installed in a fixed, outdoor location in front of my building, making it extremely difficult to access for manual intervention. Unlike when the LED is blinking red (indicating a reset is needed and connection can be attempted), when the LED is a solid amber/orange, the camera becomes completely unresponsive. It cannot be detected wirelessly, and even attempting to remove it from the Tapo app requires a power cycle or hard reset to initiate the process. This is not feasible given its elevated and relatively inaccessible mounting position, which was chosen with the expectation of reliable, continuous operation without the need for frequent physical interaction.

The unreliability of the Tapo C510W is a significant concern, especially given the investment made. The lack of a permanent solution from initial customer support is also disappointing.

I am requesting urgent assistance and a more effective solution to resolve this persistent offline issue. Are there any known compatibility problems with specific router models or firmware versions? Is there a more robust firmware update available for the Tapo C510W that addresses these connectivity problems?

I look forward to a prompt and helpful response that will finally allow my Tapo C510W camera to function reliably.

Thank you!

LED solid amber indicates the camera has disconnected from the cloud, the wifi is still connected. Usually when a camera is disconnected from the cloud, it cannot be controlled remotely anymore, e.g. using cellular data, local management through Tapo app still works.

The suggestions here might be helpful, you might want to check if there is anything you haven't tried. What should I do if I can't view the Tapo camera?

If the problem cannot be resolved, further analysis is required, you may continue the communication with the local support team.

Thank you for the update!

It's important to note that I am using local SD card storage, not cloud storage, and all recordings are being saved there. What's particularly puzzling is that even when the camera is disconnected from the Tapo app and showing a consistent red followed by an orange color, it continues to record events like person detection and vehicle movement. This suggests the core functionality is still operational, but the consistent Tapo app connection is the persistent issue.

This issue with my Tapo C510W has been recurring for the past three months. I purchased the device on August 31st, 2024, and it functioned correctly for approximately six months.

Today alone, I contacted TP-Link customer support three times. Despite promises of a replacement request, nothing materialized. I even went to the extent of performing a risky reset of the device while on a call with support. Following the reset, the support personnel suggested the issue might be with my network – a surprising statement considering my Tapo C210 works perfectly fine.

To further troubleshoot, I even invested in a dedicated Wi-Fi connection for this camera and implemented the suggested band changes. The fact that the C210 operates without issue under the same network conditions makes the C510W's persistent disconnection even more perplexing. After the reset around 13:00 IST, the C510W worked until approximately 17:30 IST before disconnecting and went offline again from the Tapo app, showing a consistent red followed by an consistent orange color. When I contacted support again, I was asked to try a mobile hotspot – a suggestion that feels rather dismissive given the troubleshooting steps already taken.

I will proceed with this step, but I must express my disappointment with the level of support received so far.

Frankly, this isn't the level of support one would expect from TP-Link, especially for a recurring issue on a relatively new device. I hope the community might have some insights or similar experiences to share.

Camera's detection and local recording function works even when the internet or the wifi connection is down. That's how it is, this isn't relevant to device's stability issue.

As mentioned, the solid amber led state indicates the camera has disconnected from the cloud. Switching the device to a different network would be a useful comparison test. In some cases, these issues may arise due to the Internet service provider, such as blocking certain communication protocols or experiencing service anomalies that prevent a successful connection. If the other WiFi network you tested is from the same router and provided by the same ISP, the test results may not show any significant differences.

This firmware has been released for nearly two months and has not received batch feedback for the same problem. Your case might be individual. Given the differences in each user’s devices, network environments, networking equipment, service providers, and other factors, the chances of encountering common issues and providing effective solutions are quite limited. For problems that cannot be solved through standard troubleshooting and require deeper analysis, support team assistance is essential. If you have any requests, I encourage you to reach out to them proactively.
