Model: Tapo C225
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.0.11

Hi,

i have a Tapo C225 v2, but cannot find the option for starlight, nor (if no option is still present) happen to make it work.

I can only switch in between day and night mode (IR).

Trying to switch to night mode during the day still shows IR black and white live view, no colors despite it is daylight.

Please support.

Thanks!

Hi,
Not all Tapo cameras have spotlights. On the Tapo C225's UG > Appearance explanation, you can see this model does not have the spotlights.
When the camera switches to Night mode, it's normal to see the live view page in black and white color.
Best Regards

  @Solla-topee

that is not true, since on the camera box the Starlight sensor is clearly mentioned!

Please clarify.

Hi,
The Tapo C225 V2 has a starlight sensor to capture clearer images even if in low light conditions, it does not mean the camera has spotlights.

  @Solla-topee i understand, but it also should allow color night mode. Instead, there is only b&w night mode.

Hi,
Usually, the color night mode is available on the camera with spotlights, and the Tapo C225 does not have that mode.
Best Regards

I see multiple threads on this issue and since this is the newest I will post my findings here.

IMO Starlight is not working on the v2, I have had it since March 2024 so I am not sure how many firmware updates it has had in this time (I think 3) but there was never an option for Starlight in the Menu and Auto simple turns from Day Mode to IR Night Mode when it gets darker and the Near and Far setting will simple use the 850nm IR LED (red glow) or the 940nm IR LED (invisible), both will reflect of glass.

I do not know why the staff member is going on about spotlights as nobody claimed this camera has a spotlight and it does not need one to see in the dark in color if there is some ambient/external light in the area.

This is my Tapo C225v2 vs a Wyze Cam v4 (same window same time and I had the Tapo up high in same position before I removed it to fit the Wyze as the results were as poor as bellow.

The back garden is pretty dark to be fair but I tested at the front where I have a busy road and street lights and the Tapo is poor with washed out colors and the Wyze is almost like day time.

  @JH30UK i agree, starlight sensor may not even be part of this v2 of the camera despite i believe it was advertised even on the cam package box. Still no official reply yet.

  @JH30UK  @Danxxx

Hi,

Thank you for your attention and consultation regarding the Tapo C225 V2 starlight sensor.

The C225 V2 is equipped with starlight sensor and it always takes effect thus the camera captures higher-quality images even in low-light conditions compared to the cameras without a starlight sensor. It's important to note that having a starlight sensor does not guarantee colorful images in all lighting situations. Generally, when the camera is set to Auto mode on the Live View page, the C225 V2 will switch to night mode in darker conditions compared to regular cameras.

Regarding the comparison between Tapo C225 V2 and Wyze Cam 4, although both cameras have starlight technology, their implementations and parameter settings differ. Additionally, the direction of the light source in the environment can also impact image quality. While the Wyze Cam 4 offers higher overall brightness, this may come at the cost of losing some bright details. In contrast, the Tapo camera may have lower brightness but provides images that are closer to the real scene.

This article may help you know more about our camera's starlight vision: Starlight Night Vision: higher-quality image in low-light conditions

Best Regards
