I see that the S515 seems to be able to accommodate 4-way setups (3 switches controlling the same fixture). The S515D Kit seems to have two dimmer compatible switches (one main, one satellite). If I am attempting to replace a 4-way setup with 3 switches (for a dimmable fixture), what needs to be purchased? A S515D Kit as well as an individual S515 switch? The latter does not seem to have dimmer functionality, whereas the former does, so can individual S515D switches be purchased? Please advise.

Tapo S515D does not support a 4-way setup. And it cannot be installed with a traditional 3-way switch or a 3-way dimmer switch.

So...under what circumstances does the 4-way compatibility for the S515 that is advertised actually work?

One of the switch in the 4-way setup can be replaced with a Tapo S515. You may check the wiring guide in this article.

@Wayne-TP What many people have been waiting for is an actual 4-way switch so that all switches in the circuit match cosmetically and not have a "dumb" switch in the path. I've got a Kasa 3-way at each end of my circuit and wish the intermediate switch could be replaced by a Kasa smart switch, but no such product exists yet.
