Model: Tapo D225
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.1.14 Build 240929 Rel. 63130n

installed Tapo D225 video doorbell yesterday and my existing house chime is not working.

Used hardwired powered but NOT using Always on Mode and not using the jumper wire.

Have transformer voltage of 19.5 at existing terminals hardwired at the back of the D225 unit.

Doorbell press does not ring existing chimes.

However, jumping a wire across the terminals at the rear of the Tapo device DOES ring the existing chime. That is of course what the simple prior doorbell accomplished when pressed.

I did pair the Tapo chime that came with the unit but that fails in comparison to the existing house chime.

Any ideas appreciated before I consider a return, thx.

  @sigman70

Please go through the setup process again to make sure everything is set up properly: enter doorbell device page in the Tapo app, go to Device Settings, click User Guide, choose Mount Guide.

*Make sure to complete the whole setup process. You may make a screen recording at the same time in case it is needed for further follow-up. Key point: 1. Disable Always-On mode; 2. Use Traditional Chime.

Solution: What can I do if the existing doorbell chime does not work with the Tapo doorbell camera?

  @sigman70 @Wayne-TP

Mine works now as well, Tapo technition emailed me with instructions to go though the user guide again, I'll relay the message I recieved below.

And same as Sigman70, I used the 'Mounting Guide' path in the app instructions to follow through.

Although I do not recall at all, he suggested I may have chose 'Always-On' and chose not to do it afterwards.

End result is the existing doorbell chime now works.

Below was the recommended process:

1. Enter the device settings page, on Tapo app.

2. Tap user Guide

3. After that, in my case I then chose 'Mounting Guide'

4. Follow the instructions and select Disable Always-On mode again for configuration, and execute is completely to the Configurations page and click finish.

This worked for me.

  @Wayne-TP I am having the same issue as Want_To_Believe...but I have the Tapo TD25 doorbell.  I have it hardwired, NOT using Always on Mode and not using the jumper wire at the existing chime.  Pressing the doorbell does not ring the existing chime.  (I did not try jumping a wire across the terminals at the rear of the Tapo device like Want_To_Believe did, so I can't comment on if this would make the existing chime work like it did in their case).  So if someone can please help me out on this I would appreciate it.  Thanks!

@Wayne-TP

So you're responding privately in a semi-public forum... Exactly how is this helpful to the others on here who are having the same issue? Helping out INSIDE a thread is why these online support exist. Otherwise why bother? I'm having the same issue and no one via the phone number knows anything.

  @Wayne-TP

Thanks, I have followed the setup process in the Installation guide, and perhaps that is the confusion.

As such per the guide;

Mount Your Doorbell

01 / Install jumper Wire for you Existing Chime

(Only necessary when hard wiring and enabling Always-On Mode)

As I stated we are not using 'Always-On Mode', so per the 'guide' I naturally did not install it.

Your suggestion is to not follow the 'guide' on that portion and install it anyway even though we are not using Always-On Mode, yes?

I installed the jumper cable, per described in the guide, even though not using Always-On Mode, no change, Traditional/Existing chime still does not work.

I can still trigger the existing chime by jumping the mounts on the back of the Tapo, as soon as I do, the existing chime will 'chime'.

Alternately, if the "Jumper" on the chime is installed, jumping the mounts on the back of the Tapo does not ring the existing 'Chime'

  @Wayne-TP I went through the setup again (mine is called Mounting Guide under the User Guide section), and this did the trick!  Maybe I didn't chose Use Traditional Chime before...but at any rate, my existing chime works when I push the doorbell button.  It's not as loud as it was with the doorbell I had before though (which was not a video doorbell), but it's loud enough that I can hear it so that's what really matters.  Thanks for the suggestion!!  :)

If the problem persists, please try to install jumper wire and test if the old chime can be ringed by Tapo doorbell.

  @Want_To_Believe

Installing a jumper is just a comparative test to help locate the issue. There is no need to install the jumper wire if the doorbell doesn't need to enable the Always On mode.
