Model: Tapo D230S1
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.17

The video call function is way too flakey so I've given up on it and turned it off.  Eventually got it working but then it just stopped, Then it would work sometimes.  Now it won't work at all.  Inconsistent behaviour even though all settings were set correct and not altered since it worked successfully.

I'm quite happy just to have my phone alert me when the doorbell is pressed via the push notification instead of a hit and miss video call but there is now a bug where a second notification arrives for a missed doorbell ring and the first notification is deleted (they have different time stamps so why the first one disappears is a mystery.  I say it's a bug because the first notification stating "someone pressed the doorbell" is subsequently deleted and replaced by a second one a minute later stating "you have missed doorbell ring" .  I got the doorbell ring notification successfully and I answered the door plus the video call function is disabled therefore there is no missed call.  Can a bug fix be applied to the next firmware update so I can receive a correct single notifiction that my doorbell has been pressed immediately and not a second delayed missed doorbell press message that removes the correct time of the first notification please?

I've also noticed regular 'the network is unstable please try later' messages when trying to play the clip from the SD card.  Can this be fixed too please?  Connection strength between doorbell and hub and hub and router are all consistently very good so the underlying cause is not network stability.

I'm building my Tapo collection steadily and I now have 5 cameras and 6 plugs and looking at light switches and bulbs next.  The doorbell is the flakiest product I have from the range so far so hopefully it can be improved upon with firmware updates.

Thanks in anticipation.

What's the model and Android/iOS version of your phone?

Regarding the playback issue, check if there are any issues with the camera live feed. Ensure that your phone's network is functioning properly, and if you have a VPN, please disable it first.

  @Wayne-TP Phone is Motorola G8 and Android version is 11.  Sky mobile 4G SIM.

Live feed always fine and no VPN.  The playback issue when it occurs is always a fail to start scenario (ie the video clip does not begin to play at all then the network unstable message appears)  Once it does start after a few attempts it always plays OK,  So it presents more as a launch issue than poor network affecting playback in that the video does not begin at all.  Once it does it plays fine.  Perhaps the weak link is the sub G protocol between the bell push and the hub?

The delayed notifications are more of a significant functionality issue than the playback of clips.  If the push notifications for doorbell presses are not real time then it's a big deal - delays of a minute are no good and even 20 or 30 seconds is way too long if someone is at your door.  20 seconds is a long time standing looking at a closed door and will usually see a delivery driver or a visitor decide you're out and walk away before you answer.

  @Deanosaurus

Please compare and test whether the playback video works normally on the local Wi-Fi network and on a remote network (e.g., using mobile data).

About the notification delay, refer to the suggestions here. How to Troubleshoot Android Delayed Notifications on Kasa /Tapo APP

Additionally, regarding the doorbell rang and doorbell missed notifications you mentioned in your post, after receiving the doorbell rang notification, did you open the app to check the camera? If you went directly to the door without checking the app, logically it would be assumed that you did not see that notification. If the app remains unchecked for one minute, the doorbell missed notification will replace the doorbell rang notification. However, if you open the app to check, the doorbell rang notification will still be retained.

  @Wayne-TP

I have just checked again and although you say "if you open the app to check, the doorbell rang notification will still be retained."  this is definitely not the case.

Only the subsequent missed doorbell ring notification is retained.  So the app is deleting the original notification and only the later one appears.  This feels wrong for 2 reasons...

1. the most important audit trail relating the physical bell press activity and its timestamp is lost

2. these notifications are push notifications to the phone not 'calls' requiring a response therefore there is no need for the secondary 'missed' doorbell ring notification to be generated at all.

The actual activity is a physical press and the actual response is a physical attendance.  The push notification of the press is required but the follow up (missed doorbell ring)  notification is not as the door has been opened.  By generating a missed doorbell notification every time you are incorrectly assuming that I am not at home and have not answered the door.  In any event the second notification serves no real purpose and adds no value over and above the first notification.

When doorbell video call is disabled a single push notification per doorbell ring is perfect and having the second one only detracts from the use your product.  I therefore respectfully ask that you consider removing the second notification as part of a future firmware upgrade.

Thanks in anticipation.
