Tapo Smart Bulb Frequent Settings Reset
Tapo Smart Bulb Frequent Settings Reset

Hi all,
I'm having an ongoing issue with my Tapo Smart Bulb, and it's getting really frustrating. Every time there's a power cut in my area (which happens quite often), the bulb ends up resetting itself. When the power comes back, it sometimes toggles on and off a few times, which seems to trigger the "Reset" action on the bulb.
This wouldn't be such a big deal if it happened occasionally, but it's almost every other day! I have other smart bulbs from different brands, and none of them have this problem, so I'm pretty sure it's an issue specific to the Tapo bulb.
The most annoying part is that I have to completely reset the bulb and re-add it to the app to get it working again. This is really time-consuming and honestly, a pain to deal with regularly.
I think a firmware update could fix this. I'm hoping Tapo Support sees this and can look into it because it’s really affecting my experience with their product.
Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Dear TP-Link
This is clearly not only a bad behaviour, but a clear bug.
On my side for example,
- I complelty shutdown the bulbs from the switch, so no electric fluctuation can happen
- Randomly in different places in my house bulbs get reset
- Bulbs are grouped together and of cours all of them are reset, the wifi networks just sudanlly apear
That being said, basic logic says that in this case the factory reset its not beause electricity issues
I'm willing to help to spend time and troubleshoot this, your R&D can push some debug software on my side, fully agree.
Thanks

Could you please clarify if this phenomenon occurs after a power outage in your home (either a sudden power cut or manually turning off the circuit breaker), or does the light bulb reset suddenly under normal conditions?
What Tapo smart bulbs do you have?

@SubM In my case there's absolutely no power outage, just people turning the bulbs off or on via the light switch, not in rapid succession too, just once or twice during the day, but with no commands from the app in-between. This means when I'm not home to command the bulbs via app, I return home to find I need to re-pair everything AGAIN.
My UPS reports no outages and I have directed everyone to *not* turn off and on the lights in rapid succession so it is definitely the issue with the bulbs

When you reconfigure the light bulb, do you need to reset it again? Do you see its device wifi showing on the wifi list before performing a reset?

Hi,
I have the same issue and the status in the APP is Off-line.
Do I need to reinstall the smart bulbs again?
Best.

When the light bulb is offline, is the default WiFi used for configuration not appear?Does it take a manual reset to become visible? If so, the lightbulb has not been reset.
Please check if the device appears online in the app when your phone is connected to the local Wi-Fi network. Additionally, you can check the router's Wi-Fi list to see if the bulb is still connected.

I'm having the exact same issue with my Tapo bulbs, and it's incredibly frustrating. In my case, I have small children who sometimes play with the light switch, and the fact that toggling it three times triggers a factory reset is a huge pain. I often find myself having to reconfigure the bulbs from scratch because they keep losing their settings.
There really should be a better way to reset these bulbs, either a physical button or a more intentional on/off pattern that doesn’t get triggered so easily by accident. It makes no sense that a basic switch flip can wipe the entire configuration.
Unless this is addressed in a firmware update, I won’t be buying any more Tapo bulbs. This is a serious usability flaw that turns what should be a convenient smart home device into a constant headache.

I completely agree. I’m really disappointed that I chose these bulbs, but luckily, I still have other brands running alongside them without any issues. So, Tspo will be phased out now.
