Model: Tapo C211
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

Not having the ability to mount a camera externally and not having the ability to turn off the automatic day/night-IR switching makes the camera useless for covering my driveway at night from my window.

It seems if I'd gone with the cheaper c210 this feature would be available? Seems like this kind of customisation, already built into other cameras, should be standard?

Tapo C211 is an indoor camera. If you're looking for a camera for the outdoors, check here: TP-Link Home Security - Outdoor Cameras

The infrared light cannot essentially be turned off. Some cameras equipped with 940 nm IR LEDs, like the Tapo C120, can make the infrared light invisible to the human eyes. However, when the IR camera is placed behind reflective surfaces such as glass windows, the infrared light can still be reflected, which will affect the camera's night mode images.

Except that putting it indoors to point outdoors is a perfectly reasonable thing to want to do. I managed to block the IR of my present camera with electrical tape but even many several layers don't reduce the IR reflections from this camera.

Since it automatically switches the LEDs on when it detects darkness, it could easily have the ability in the firmware to disable that feature. I have streetlights and don't need the IR anyway, the reflections make it useless so I will have to return 2 cameras for the lack of a simple toggle switch and FW support,

In case anyone is interested. I disassembled the unit and severed two tracks that feed the 4 IR LEDs so that it cannot emit IR. It works great for my need, through glass at the front of my house. The only downside is that it is monochrome when it is 'dark' despite the streetlights allowing colour easily - which can be seen for a few seconds if 'privacy mode' is enabled and disabled and the camera viewed (it takes a moment or two to work out it is dark and switch).
