Have you updated the latest firmware(1.2.10 Build 241025 Rel.55515n) on the Tapo C520WS? If not, please try to update the firmware via the Tapo app and check if it solves the issue.

I have already updated the firmware and I still get the problem. I just don't enable the alarm feature because it is a hassle to reset the device again.Firmware Ver

I enabled the alarm feature again, now the smart mode is not working properly even when the alarm feature has been disabled. The camera stays in infrared mode all night even when an event has been detected.

If you have enabled the Motion Tracking feature, please turn it off for a try.

I came here to report the same issue. I just bought a Tapo C520WS Hardware: 1.0  Camera and during the initial setup process I got the

Firmware: 1.2.10 Build 241025 Rel.55515n
I became a little confused by reading all this discussion here and did factory reset the camera many times. I setup a dark room for the purpose of testing this feature and learned that the white LED activation (smart mode) always worked for the first movement detection event immediately after the initial setup (after factory reset). After the white LEDs turned off (default 5 minutes) the next motion detection won't turn the White LEDs  on again and the camera stays on Infra-red lighting only.
 
I tried to find a pattern in order to pinpoint the issue and while performing the many factory resets and configuration changes I noticed that the white LED triggering on motion (smart mode) works always (even after the initial setup - again, always) if and only if  the Tapo Android app is active and I'm watching the live view on the phone (moving in front of the camera to trigger a motion detection event). And I always had the Tapo Android App watching the live view after the initial setups (after the factory default resets) I just didn't realize that it was a condition for the smart mode to function.
 
Having said all this I do now strongly believe that this ia a programming/coding issue (some bad logic / conditional checking in the Firmware) and it needs fixing. Please tell your colleagues to test their resolve not only when watching the camera live on the Android App, but also when the Tapo app si not connected to the camera and the camera stays in its default surveillance mode waiting to detect a movement.

My issue with the smart mode was solved with the recent firmware update. All functions and features works normally.

Hello,

 

thank you for your quick reply. Today I ordered a second C520WS for my application and by tomorrow I'll receive it. I believe it will be the same HW version (1) as it comes from the same reseller. One i receive it I'll definitely want to fix them both before the final installation in my yard (it'll be difficult to play with them (dismount) afterwards).

 

As requested, I'll send you a pm with both MAC addresses in order to receive the fixed firmware on both cameras.
