@Nick2 @alanchow It can be done via a tool called ffmpeg, which takes a snapshot from the stream. I use it to take a snapshot every 15 minute to eventually create a time lapse (on my Raspberry Pi, but it can also be done in Windows I suppose).

This is the command line I use:

ffmpeg  -i "rtsp://username:password@ipaddress/stream1" -f image2 -vframes 1 -pix_fmt yuvj420p output.jpg

I hope this helps.

@Brook

It has been almost a year since you reported it to the senior engineers. I have a Tapo C210 and it cannot take a snapshot either. It's a really good camera and I would buy 5 Tapo cameras. But not without the snapshot function. Please change that. Almost every other camera on the market can use the snapshot command via http url. It can be used in any smart home system. It's very important for that.

@Brook

Please talk to your engineering team again. Or change the specifications in your datasheet (http protocol) ...
Thanks a lot, we really need this feature for home automation applications. Except for this problem, this camera is excellent!

@Kama

That solution needs a permanent running computer in the network. So this will not be acceptable for many customers.

For my understanding it cannot be a big thing to implement for the TP-Link software programmers. Only a will is needed.

@fitzge: Just to clarify. I'm just a user, not someone with any contact with the tp-link guys. It depends how you need to use the snapshot. When you want to access it directly via an URL, my proposed solution will need a computer (e.g. raspberry pi). Personally I use it to create snapshots every 15 minutes for a timelapse, so I have a raspberry pi running for the cron job anyway. I agree that adding the option to retrieve a snapshot from the camera direclty would be a simple yet very useful addition.
