What effect does turning off the remote control setting have apart from the obvious? Does it provide any level of additional security by only allowing access within my own network?

Nothing additional that I am aware of. Just the ability to control it outside of your own network.

One thing it *doesn't* do is prevent the device from contacting the TP Link servers nor NTP servers all over the world.  Turning off remote access only stops *you* from accessing your devices, TP Link still has control over them.  Only a firewall will stop them completely.
