So I just bought a new smart light switch, and went to install it, but the fixture has two black wires and I only have one live wire coming through the wall. Is the light switch not going to work? Or do I connect the two wires to the one live wire? I was thinking maybe it powered two seperate things in the switch???

It probably won't work there. You need a neutral wire, line in, and load going to the fixture. You might have power through fixture type wiring which is a problem for smart switches.

I have the same problem. Is there any way around this issue? It creates a big problem when I can only control 2 or my 4 switches in the basement.

Not safely, you need all 3 wires.  If they're not available the box needs to be re-wired.

You will likely want to hire an electrician but, there are some youtube videos on how to re-wire a box with no neutral wire:

Is there a ground wire?  Or is this an old home where they use to run power to each light and send down either the neutral or the live wire to be completed by the switch?
