Model: Tapo D210
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.16

I will write separately about my disappointment at just about every aspect of the D210 doorbell.
BUT...
This is a question for other owners of this (or similar) doorbells re Tapo's installation advice.
The marketing hype photos on their D210 product pages show it installed in a few different typical front porches.
Which has proved to be very false compared to my experience.

I have a front door with a porch about 1.5m (60") deep, walls on either side of the door, then two steps down to a straight path leading to the door.

The doorbell is mounted at the suggested height of 1.2 m (48").

View below.

It has been almost totally useless at detection, working no better thn my old standard doorbell (which is a lot more reliable).

Here's my question:

In one of the times I have had to take it out to reset or charge it, when I was looking at the Tapo help text in the app, I saw for the first time advice that if the porch is less than 5m in depth (!), you should not mount it on the door, but on the side,  using the angle bracket.
I have no idea what this advice is based on - though I will probably have to try it because it is pretty useless on the door.

I have looked for this in their setup guide, user guide, overview etc and cannot find these instructions. They are only buried somewhere in the Troubleshooting or Installation pages in the app.
Can anyone shed light on this, please?
I know that I will probably throw the D210 out within a month, and remind myself not to read their marketing blurbs (I did not) and the YouTube people they sponsor or give freebies to. (I did)

This mount guide is actually first presented in the setup process, and there is also a backup on the device setting page. This guide aims to offer precise installation recommendations, helping the doorbell perform at its best in a wide range of user environments and scenarios.

Regarding the installation guidance you have questions about:

  • If the porch is shallow and the doorbell is positioned directly facing the entrance, the doorbell can easily detect the activities outside the porch. If that's a busy street, the doorbell will be woken up frequently and detect more unnecessary events, draining the battery quickly. In this case, installing the doorbell on the side of the entrance (and using the wedge) can help to limit the doorbell’s field of view to focus on your porch area while minimizing interference from external activity.
  • On the other hand, if the porch is deeper, the doorbell is less likely to be triggered by distant movements.

There isn't a strict rule about whether the doorbell should be installed on the door or the wall. The placement mainly depends on the typical path people take when approaching your entrance.

It seems your doorbell will run by battery instead of being hardwired, so I'll also explain this part here.  For a battery-powered camera/doorbell, it remains in sleep mode most of the time to preserve battery life. To wake up the camera, it relies on a PIR sensor, which detects changes in infrared radiation and is primarily used to detect objects with heat signatures, such as humans, animals, or moving vehicles.

When the camera is installed directly facing the monitoring area, it may fail to detect activity when someone walks straight toward it. This happens because the heat signature generated by radial movement - walking directly toward the camera - produces minimal changes, which the PIR sensor struggles to detect. As a result, the camera may not wake up and capture movements effectively in this scenario.
