Is there a way to automate turning off the detection modes?
I have automated turning off and on Privacy mode on arriving and leaving but I'm quite happy to leave Live mode active when I'm home.
I'd just like to stop recording all motion when I'm home.

Tapo cameras do not support the feature to turn on/off the detection types via the Smart Action feature.
In your usage scenario, you may try to set the Home mode on the Tapo app to turn off all cameras' detection types, and when you go home, you can turn off all cameras' detection types by tapping the Home mode card.
