When the WAN1 connection type is configured to use dynamic IP, the web page has an optional field to specify the host name. The is good.

 

However, when the WAN1 connection type is configured to static IP, the web page has no way to specify the host name. Is this behavior expected?

 

Be able to specify the host name associated with device might be useful for system administration and also for consistency with a signed certificate.

Are you looking for the LAN settings instead of the WAN?

Why would the hostname bind to the WAN IP? If you need that, register a domain first, use DDNS and bind it.

 

You can bind the router LAN IP to a hostname, not the WAN. They are different. On the WAN, that's FQDN.

Yes, you're right that the binding of the hostname for the static address can be done externally on a DNS.

 

The point I was trying to surface is that explicitly setting a hostname within the device can be beneficial if the device generates any self-signed certificate, such as SSL. For the self-signed cert from the device, the information about the fully qualified hostname and static ip address could enrich the cert to help prevent man in the middle attacks.
