Firmware Version: 2.2.6

Hi,

Lately I have faced some strange behavior in one of my networks. I've tried to investigate and check few solutions but without luck and now I'm out of ideas. Maybe you could help me and suggest what else could I check/change to investigate the problem more?

Description of an issue:

Every few hours (it's not always the same period of time) the PING to web (google.com or other) is skyrocketing (500-3000ms) for like 5-10 seconds, then goes back to normal (30-50ms). During those few seconds the internet connectivity is out - pages do not load, Spotify/Youtube streaming stops. After those few seconds the Internet is back and everything works.

The problem is visible on multiple computers (Windows) as well as on mobile phones (both Android and iOS).

What I have already done/tested:

  1. The problem occured the first time on a Stand Alone version of setup, with external ISP modem (double NAT) - nothing weird was visible in LOGs therefore I've decided to connect ER605 to my on-premis Controller to have direct access to device everytime I need. - That didn't change the behavior anyhow, so the problem occurs in both management scenarios.
  2. I've changed DNSes from ISP's to 1.1.1.1 and 9.9.9.9 - Still the same problem.
  3. I've changed echo server to custom one - 1.1.1.1 - except from lowering PING on Dashboard by few ms, the problem is still there.
  4. For testing reasons, I've changed Online Detection Interval to 10s - that didn't report an connectivity issue, not even once.
  5. I've deactivated L2TP (previously) and WireGuard (currently) configuration - no change.
  6. I've switched modem device as well as ISP provider - in both cases the problem still occurs.
  7. I've switched ISP's modem to Bridge Mode - no luck, still the same.
  8. I've switched Online Detection Interval to 1h - no change.
  9. Nothing in logs :(
  10. This happens even if the network is not heavily occupied.

Those peaks are also (sometimes) visible on controller's graph:

My current setup:

Dynamic IP from ISP.

Local network DHCP from ER605.

No VLANs.

WireGuard configuration, where ER605 is a client.

Huawei B535-232 in Bridge Mode (ISP) <=RJ45=> ER605 <=RJ45 PoE=> EAP110 <=2.4GHz WiFi => 6 clients tops

So... Any ideas what to check next? This is not a deal breaker or anything, just annoying on a daily basis :)

Cheers!

For anyone interested in this topic.

After some addiditonal testing I've "discovered" that only 10% (or less) of the issues is connected with WAN itself, therefore I could safely say that this part is on ISP's end and there is noting I can do. Those are te peaks that were visible on Controller's graph.

However, majority of the issues are connected with WiFi itself. I've beed gathering PING results for over 24h from different devices and my observation is that ER605 or EAP110 are working properly (in terms of responses to PING). The problem is with device connected via WiFi, most of the latency peaks are there - so the WAN responses properly but attempt to ping WiFi device fails.

Due to the fact, that all WiFi devices are failing at the same time (while WAN is properly working), I assuem that EAP110 myst be the source of the problem. Unfortunately those are out of support so I'm not expecting any FW updates anytime... I'll try to check the device configuration and work with some settings.

So far (based on googling and other cases described by internet users) I have tried to downgrade the FW to 5.0.3 as well as change the WiFi mode from B/G/N to B/G - none of that solved the issue.

Cheers.

Hi @RaRu

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

There doesn't seem to be a problem with the router.

It seems to be a problem with the ISP line or their server.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

I was leaning towards the same conclusion and that's why I've replaced old modem (Huawei B525-23a) to newer one (Huawei B535-232) and the to the newest one (Huawei H155-381).

Along with that change I was also switching ISPs from one to another, also changing the connection technology from 4G to 5G.

No matter of the configuration (device/ISP/technology) the result was exactly the same. :(

Indoor fiber was not replaced, is that correct?

Did they test the fiber dbm?

If that's the case, you can consider getting a backup same model or a higher one for test.

This kind of situation is really hard to identify which is the reason for the latency surge.

There is no optic fiber. Those are cellular carriers who provide Internet via 4G/5G network.

I guess I'll try some more tests and then leave it be, unless someone in here has some idea what to do next.

Thanks for your time Clive :)

Thought that was a Huawei fiber modem.

If that's a 4/5G modem, that's normal. You cannot make sure that the modem to the cellular base is in perfect connection. They're on auto mode most likely. And it could switch to another base.

It'd be even harder to diagnose.
