Declined EP40M Matter Outdoor Plug Energy Monitoring
So I picked up the Kasa EP40M since it supports Matter, but I was pretty surprised to see that it doesn’t have energy monitoring—especially considering a bunch of TP-Link’s other plugs, including cheaper ones, already do.
I’m trying to figure out why it was left out. The hardware needed for energy monitoring (a metering IC and shunt resistor) costs next to nothing, so it doesn’t seem like a cost issue. Was this just an oversight, or is there a technical reason? Also, is there any chance this could be added through a firmware update? And if not, could there be a future version that includes energy monitoring? If that happens, would TP-Link offer some kind of exchange program for people who bought the current model?
For context, Meross has already introduced an energy monitoring outdoor plug to the European market at the exact same price point, so it's clearly possible to include this feature without increasing costs.
Would love to hear an official response on this.
