Trouble with OpenVPN server and OpenVPN for Android ER-605
![](/avatar/avatar-1.png)
I'm having issues getting connected to the OpenVPN server I've set up, via my Pixel 7a, running OpenVPN for Android.
What's happening is that the phone connects fine the 1st time.
Then when I disconnect, I actuall look on the router under the OpenVPN Tunnel, and the tunnel is still listed there instead of being killed off.
When I try to reconnect form the phone, it won't reconnect because of this.
If I restart the OpenVPN server on the ER605, it will kill that tunnel, I then have no issue reconnecting.
What is the expected behaviour here? Seems the OpenVPN server should terminate the connection upon the client disconnecting, but it's not doing that.
Additionally, I'd like to know what does the "Status:" option do here in the OpenVPN server setup? I don't find this documented anywhere... anyone know??
Thanks!

@RaRu the dev emailed me back and suggested adding the following to the client side
explicit-exit-notify 3
Which I did under SERVER LIST, Custom Options (in the app)
This resolved the problem, the tunnel is now immediately closed on the OpenVPN server on the ER605 once I click disconnect on the client app!
Cheers!!

Status is only a Enable/Disable trigger of whole server. That's all :)
What VPN app do you use on your android device for the connection?
Oh, and first, start by updating your ER605 firmware. You have 2.2.4 version, current one is 2.2.6 ;)

"Status is only a Enable/Disable trigger of whole server. That's all :)" - sorry I don't follow what this means.
If I have the box checked for Status - what does it do?
If I have the box unchecked for Status - what does it do?
If this in a document somewhere?
I'm using OpenVPN for Android v0.7.54
In regards to updating the FW that is a problem, see here: https://community.tp-link.com/en/business/forum/topic/741766

Checked means the server is UP and available for connections.
Unchecked means the configuration is there but the server is down, will now accept any connections.
Instead of deleting whole servers when you don't want any of your users to use it, you can just uncheck it so those goes down.
Why do you use such old app on android? Have you tried installin OpenVPN Connect v3.5.1 from Google Store? I use that one and it works perfectly. You just need to make cure to edit the config file properly:

I hope TP-Link support will help you soon with the FW upgrade.

@RaRu it's not an old app, it's actually updated more recently than the OpenVPN connect app.
See here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.blinkt.openvpn&hl=en-US
>this has more features, is more configurable, and has the ability of tagging android apps from using the VPN

The one you're talking about is here, last update October 2024: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.openvpn.openvpn&hl=en-US

OK, but it's done by some single dev and not a 1.0 ver which suggest it's still not done app.
Can you, for the testing, try an official app from OpenVPN? Just to see if then the session is properly terminated when disconnecting?
That will help us establish if that's something wrong with your server or maybe the app is at fault.

Edit
-looks like the standard OpenVPN app sends a disconnect to the TP Link router
-the other app OpenVPN for Android, must not send it, and so I guess it eventually times out on the TP link end.
Basically the connection is closed form the phone, and I sit there and hit refresh, and it's still showing me that there is a tunnel, for about 3.5 minutes
>I'm going to contact the Dev and raise this issue - on both apps I'm importing the profile, it must not add some disconnect line in the config I guess?
Thanks for your help troubleshooting, I could swear I tried both and that both were behaving the same on the TP link end.

Glad we managed to find the issue here :)
I'm not sure if that have anything in common with config file itself... I would say it's most app's doing.
I'm not an expert of programming nor VPN therefore I won't be able to answer that. I guess reaching out to the dev with the bug you've found is a good idea.
Cheers.
