Model: ER605 (TL-R605)
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 2.2.6

Hi,

I am experiencing issues with the switching time of the "Link Backup" feature on my ER605 V2 router.

My current setup includes a primary connection through my ISP modem connected to the ER605's WAN port and a secondary connection via a TP-Link NX200 with an LTE SIM card connected to the WAN1 port. Both devices are running the latest firmware.

I have configured WAN1 as the backup link for the primary WAN. While the Link Backup functionality works, the switching time when the primary connection fails is excessively long, often exceeding one minute. This delay is a significant issue for maintaining uninterrupted connectivity in my office.

To address this, I installed the Omada Controller software to adjust the online detection settings. I set both the ping and DNS lookup to use Google's servers at 8.8.8.8, with a detection interval of one second.

Despite these adjustments, the switching time remains over a minute. I also attempted to manage the Link Backup through the NX200 by connecting the ISP modem to its WAN port, but this approach resulted in a complete loss of connectivity when the primary connection failed.

I would like to know if this behavior is expected for the ER605 V2 or if it might be related to my configuration.

With my current devices, is it possible to achieve a faster failover time of just a few seconds, whether or not I use the Omada Controller? If not, could you recommend another TP-Link device that supports faster Link Backup switching to ensure continuous service?

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi @matts3

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

I am quite doubtful reading your description in the Controller part. Since you have changed the online detection interval, what did you use to test its switch speed?

After several fails of the detection packets, it'd switch but should not be that slow. I am doubting your test methodology.

About how it works, see the KB and I particularly wrote an article about this.

Hi @Clive_A,
thank you for your reply.
To test the switch, I ran ping -t 8.8.8.8, then disconnected the primary network from the router's web interface and waited for the ping to succeed again.
I found your article in the KB, thank you. I will perform further tests.

If you tested it with ping, it should be pretty fast instead of 1 minute to switch. 3 pings are sent periodically based on your config.

Open for discussion after your reading on the current mechanism.
