Model: ER605 (TL-R605)
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.1 Build 20220512 Rel.76748

I wanted to upgrade my firmware for the ER605 hardware v1.0 but the description for the new firmware mentions only Omada v5.8 while I'm using the beta v5.9.9. Is it still safe to upgrade the ER605 v1 with firmware ER605 V1_1.2.3 Beta Firmware For Trial (Released on Feb 28th, 2023)? Having some stability issues when streaming Live TV and missing the Mode: CA+Account option for OpenVPN clients. Maybe at least one of these problems will be fixed with this firmware.

Yes, newer controllers can handle older firmwares, the reverse is not true. I run 1.2.2 on my V1's with 5.9.9 just fine.

  @d0ugmac1 Unfortunately the upgrade, although was successful, did not resolve my missing vpn Mode (Username/password) option so I still can't configure it to connect it to NordVPN :-( Not sure why they couldn't add something so simple to this router.

  @yorkman

So you, like I am waiting for the 1.2.3 firmware to arrive for the ER605v1... me for Wireguard you for user+pass for OpenVPN

You may also wish to see this post, sounds like even if you do get it connected, the throughput is less than awesome.

  @d0ugmac1 As mentioned I've already successfully upgraded to the 1.2.3 firmware on my ER605v1. But there's still no OpenVPN mode option. I'm going to be more careful and try to avoid TP-Link products when the time comes to upgrade again. Thanks for the info.

  @yorkman the current 'beta 1.2.3' for the V1 is missing all the cool features that the v2 version got in 1.2.3.  It shouldn't even be called 1.2.3 IMHO.

  @yorkman ER605 V1.0 unfortunately isn't supporting vpn credentials such as NordVPN and so forth. I went ahead and ordered a refurbished 7206 v1.60 off Amazon for $100. Everything works great. throughput on the Mbps is around 26 Mbps for both down/up. My connection is 200/55. It works for what I need it for one my network. the ER605 v2 I believe has a harder time with VPN speeds from what I have read on here. Much slower than 7206. This is setup with OpenVPN client on the router. The 8411 I believe the 10G router supports over 1 gig in OpenVPN. I read about it somewhere on the site on its throughput, if your VPN provider allows that much. I got tired of waiting for V1 605 to get a OpenVPN update to run NordVPN. Hope this helps!

  @Meridion Thank you for the informative response. That helped a lot in my decision making. I only but this router maybe 1.5 yrs ago and to not have full OpenVPN support is a shame on TP-Link in my opinion. I appreciate the suggestion on the 8411 but the way I see it it's time to step away from TP-Link routers. I'm not about to fork out over $500 just so that I can connect to NordVPN. I'll be looking for cheaper solutions not made by TP-Link. I too was thinking about the 7206 but with only 26 Mbps that doesn't cut it for me since I get 500 Mbps speeds with NordVPN without a vpn.

The ER-X has about the same performance as the 7206 with openvpn: community*ui*com/questions/Test-ER-X-OpenVPN-performance/1b9b849c-3a41-4f6b-af27-23e428661d1a

Crypto is hard on the low cost SOC's the entry level routers are built on.

Maybe something like this on Amazon:  MikroTik hEX S Gigabit Ethernet Router with SFP Port (RB760iGS)
