I recently decided to switch my home networking setup to full Omada. I wanted to be able to have separate VLAN's for normal, Iot and Guest networks. Also have a fairly big house so liked the idea of having legit AP's rather than using multiple wireless routers as AP's. And another big plus was the wall AP's having built in ports.

 

Bought everything from amazon, ER605, TL-SG2210MP, OC200, 2x EAP620HD, 2x EAP615-Wall. The wall AP's arrived a day after everything else. So I already had the router, switch, controller and 1 620HD hooked up and working when the wall AP's arrive. Got to work setting up the first one, love how easy it is to just adopt it and have it auto configure. But then the problems started, I was only getting 100Mb. Did a lot of troubleshooting and led myself to believe there was an issue with AP, even though sometimes(plugged direct into the switch with like a 7 foot cable) I could get it to negotiate to 1000Mb. The last troubleshooting step was to try the 2nd wall AP in the same spot the first one having issues. It connects and negotiates to 1000Mb with no issue.

 

I keep working with the 1st malfunctioning 615 Wall AP and again it will connect at 1000 when I connect it to the switch with a cable that's not in wall. So I figure lets try it in the bedroom where it is meant to go. In the bedroom it powers up but will not connect in the interface(shows disconnected). So then I bring up the 620HD and the 615 Wall that is working fine to the bedroom. 620HD powers on and connects without issue. The "good" 615 Wall powers on but again does not connect. Brought the "good" 615 Wall back to the basement and it works fine down here.

 

All the cables in the wall are Cat 5e. The bedroom cable may be the longest run in the house, but should still be well within the maximum length for Cat5e.I'm not real familiar with POE, like if it puts extra strain on the cable and maybe the cable in the bedroom just isn't up to the task,but if that were the case then the 620HD wouldn't work. I looked up the power requirements for both the 620 and 615Wall and I think they both draw 13 watts so I am at a loss as to why the wall AP's won't connect in the bedroom?

 

I really like this setup, but not gonna lie those wall APs with the built in ports were a big draw for me. If I can't get them working then I'll probably have to return the entire setup unfortunately. Any help would be appreciated.

I would get a cable tester to confirm the cable does pass the test?

 

Also have you tried a different switch port?

 

I have the 615 all in the wild and they run fine and duplex at 1G.  

 

Possibly that you got some bad units.

How long is that Cat5e cable running to your bedroom (ballpark guess)? Cat5e SHOULD be ok up to 300 ft in length, but that's not always the case. Patch cable quality is key, and you may find out that longer cables have difficulty negotiating at 1Gbps speeds. Other things to check would be the jack (if you're using one). Also try connecting other 1Gbps-capable devices to that same patch cable in the bedroom to find out if they negotiate at 1Gbps full duplex. I think you mentioned another EAP model negotiated at 1000Mbps on the bedroom connection...if that's the case, the cable may be "borderline", operating fine at 1000Mbps with some devices but not others that may be more intolerant of any throughput issues or cable resistance. 

 

I used heavier gauge Cat6 cables throughout my house back when it was built about 10 years ago, but 5e is usually ok for 1Gbps. PoE should be fine as long as all 4 twisted pairs are properly crimped inside that Cat5e plug. Start by testing other devices...there's always a chance the NIC on the EAP is faulty. If you have any dummy switches between that EAP and your router, those can be problematic as well. If you recently purchased the EAP, you could replace it with another and rule out whether or not you have a faulty EAP.

Can you recommend a cable tester?

 

I was finally able to get this AP to work after trying a million things. I was at my wits end and decided to try it one more time and all of a sudden it just worked. Could be a bad cable, but it has worked fine in the past and working now. So it would have to be an intermittent issue which makes it a pain to test for. But I have never used a cable tester before so curious to see what that does. Although at this point I am leery to disconnect the AP lol.

Yeah I was able to connect an EAP620HD at 1000 with same cable and port on the switch. I actually did eventually get the EAP615 Wall to connect at 1000 as well, but I feel like at this point it was a fluke, but I am afraid to touch it now that it is working.

 

That cable is probably the longest run in the house, would be tough for me to put a distance on it, but I can't imagine its over 300 feet, and it has worked perfectly well prior to this with every other device I've connected to it.

 

I would love to be able to test it, hell I'd love to be able to re-terminate it with another RJ45 connector but the builders left me absolutely no slack to have any room to cut off the current connect and add another. I've considered getting a coupler, but if there is any concern with the cable being too long already I don't want to make it longer lol. But like I said I can't see it being longer then 300 feet. It is a 2 story house plus basement. Cables "start" in the basement in the center of the house and the bedroom is actually above the garage kind of outside the main area of the house. But still figure 10-15 feet per floor for height, that leaves like 270 feet to run from the center of my house to the bedroom. The house is big but it ain't that big. But I don't know the exact path the cable takes either so who knows. I'd love to run new cat6 cable all through the house, but along with not leaving any slack/extra cable in the walls I am not confident that they ran these cables with the thought/plan that someone might rerun them at a later date. Not saying I can't do it, but I am concerned it would be more complicated then just pulling a new cable, may have to do some minor demo to the drywall in places to facilitate and I'd prefer not to do that and/or may hire that out to someone else if I do decide to do it.

 

But yeah, currently the AP is working in that spot, but it was so troublesome that I would not be surprised if there is some minor issue with the cable causing random issues.Just weird that it works fine with so many other devices, but not so much with 2x EAP615 Wall APs.

  @KrypticPhish If you are in the US, check out the Klein Scout Pro 3.  It will tell you open or short faults, and can measure cable length on a pair by pair basis.  Using the length measurement can help tell where a bad spot is that is not fully failed

I did notice my connectors had to be seating into the back of the in wall fairly hard.  Could be my connectors, but Just something I noticed.  

 

I would get anything Fluke for cable testing.. Theyre the main brand out in the industry.

Thats good to know, maybe I just need better connectors, and the cables are just loose in the wall so I could easily see it not seating fully being an issue.


Flukes are crazy expensive unless there is a cheap one I am unaware of. I could probably rewire my whole house for the cost of one. Used them at work before, they are nice. But I may try the klein someone else recommended.  Although at this point I am leery to disconnect the AP since it is finally working lol
