what is the current firmware version of both not-working plugs? can you show us a screenshot of that invalid argument?
do they all connect to the same Wi-FI?

Thanks for replying! There is a tech-support ticket open [342361] and working at this point, and I'll post the outcome here once there's a resolution.

To your questions:
Tech Support has provided the firmware-update tool, which I ran on the two troublesome plugs last night. As supplied, the plugs were on ver 1.1.1 (as are the two HS100 currently working correctly) but I updated both to ver 1.1.2 as directed. All are connected to the same network, and all plugs are hardware version 1.0 per the Kasa app.

No change in plug behavior after the update- the update tool ran normally, and both plugs are controlled with the (Android) Kasa app but neither will accept the command to turn 'remote control' to on... the Kasa app briefly displays a small dialog box which reads "failed:invalid argument" but that fades (~2 sec) with no other comment or parameter given.

The update tool located the two plugs immediately via their IP, so they are definitely online with the WiFi... testing has been with the plugs within 3 meters of the router and 1 meter of the Android phone, same room/within range and adequate signal (plug is reporting -53dBm via the Kasa app).

As noted above, the previously-purchased plugs are still on ver 1.1.1 and work normally with Alexa.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, and I will update this thread with anything noteworthy.

Hi, and thank you for your reply. I will ask my wifr to check each one (I am legally blind and can't use a tablet/phone). I wish they would allow for PC because I can use that.. I will post a relpy once I have a nswer.. She did say that the app she had said. "No firmware updates available".

:o I found the latest firmware for HS100 is 1.1.3 currently. If your plug is not this one, you can try to use computer to update it: http://static.tp-link.com/iotUpgradeTool_V1.0.zip
The latest version of android is 1.7.10 and 1.7.9 for IOS. Uninstall and reinstall the kasa app will let you have the latest firmware.
A reset to the plug is worth trying.

TP-Link Tech Support has been extremely responsive via email, and I believe this matter is now resolved- I borrowed another phone more recent than my aging Galaxy 4 (a Motorola Nexus 6, running Android 7) and was able to easily integrate the HS100 plugs into my network AND enable 'remote control' for control via Amazon Alexa.

No idea why I was able to configure my first two HS100 with the Samsung, but after several quick tests (and some special-edition firmware from TP-Link) it was clear that the plugs themselves were behaving normally but integration was stumbling elsewhere. Tip o' the hat to TP-Link, they have at least as much time in this as I do (and the easier thing would have been just to throw more plugs at the consumer).

All good! If you're having this same integration issue with an older phone, my Samsung is on Android 5.0.1 and that was very likely the sticking point... borrow something newer, if you can!

I know it's been a while but thank you.. My question is, my wife has the newest version of the Kasa app and I downloaded and unzipped the firmware tool. Can I put the unzipped tool on a USB and plug it into her Android tablet and run it? Will that work?
