Model: Tapo L535E
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.1.5 Build 240328 Rel. 194528

Dear TP-Link Support Team,

I recently purchased two of your products: L530E and L535E. I successfully set up both devices; however, I am experiencing an issue with the L535E model.

The L535E device only works in "Local Connection" mode via the Tapo app. When I attempt to use it over mobile internet or a different access point, I cannot control the device through the Tapo app. Interestingly, when connected via Google Home, I can make changes to the device using mobile internet or other access points without any issues.

For comparison, the L530E device works perfectly fine with the Tapo app over an internet connection.

Here are the details of my setup:

  • Device Model: L535E V3

  • Firmware Version: 1.1.5

  • Router Model: EX530V

  • I have performed a factory reset on the L535E.

  • I tried connecting the device through different access points, but the issue persists.

  • I configured my modem with Google DNS (8.8.8.8), although I suspect my ISP does not allow DNS changes.

  • I tested wireless channels 1, 6, and 11.

  • I also tested the L535E device using an S7 Deco as an access point. The S7 Deco and my main modem use different SSIDs.

Despite these efforts, I couldn't resolve the issue. The L530E device works flawlessly, while the L535E seems limited to local connectivity in the Tapo app.

I would appreciate your guidance on how to address this issue. Please let me know if you need any additional details or logs.

Thank you for your assistance.

  @cvc92,

To clarify, how are you controlling the device in Google? By logging into your Tapo account or did you set the device up in the Google Home App via Matter? The L535E has the added option of being controlled via Matter locally, rather than through the cloud

If setup via Matter, this would make sense as it is a hub on your network that is sending the commands and the Tapo App wouldnt work because its cloud connection is broken.

If setup via logging into your Tapo Account login credentials, its a lot more complicated. Typically, when a device goes into local-only mode, the voice assistant integrations will also break - with the only ways to control the device being the Tapo App, or in the case of your Matter-compatible device, from a Matter Controller on the Network.

Assuming that you set the device up via Matter, these are completely separate control mechanisms and one can continue without the other - meaning the Matter connection to the hubs does not depend on the Tapo cloud being available to the device.

It does sound as though the device could not establish its connection to the cloud/internet and this should be done via a factory reset and reconfiguring the device.

When you reset the device, was it a soft reset or a full factory reset? Its possible that the device needs a complete reset since its network settings are still operational. I also believe that the initial binding of a device to your Tapo Account only happens after a full factory reset.

I would also recommend trying to use a different device to reconfigure the device in case it is a behaivor from the app, rather than the device.

  @Riley_S

First of all, thank you for your response.

I added the Tapo app to Google Home as a linked service, and this way, I can turn my light on and off using mobile internet even when Wi-Fi is turned off. I haven’t connected the device using Matter.

Since Google Home is able to connect to the device, I believe the device can access the internet, but it seems unable to connect to the cloud. However, I am unsure if Google Home communicates with the device through the Tapo cloud or some other mechanism.

I performed a factory reset by turning the device on and off more than five times, waiting for about one second between each cycle. Afterward, I connected it to my Deco network, ensuring that the Deco’s 5 GHz band was disabled and only the 2.4 GHz network was active, but the situation didn’t change.

I also tried configuring the device using a different phone, but the connection still shows as "local only." I then reset the L530E and reconnected it using the phone I originally registered the device with, but the issue remains the same—it only shows as "local connection."

For additional context, I use the same Tapo account on both phones (not different accounts). Currently, I am in a situation where I can control the device over the internet via Google Home, but I can only use the Tapo app when connected to the local network.

Could the device be blocked on the Tapo account? Should I try creating a new Tapo account and registering the device there?

Additionally, I am including screenshots showing that the device appears online in Google Home even when the internet is turned off. If there are any other details I can share to help diagnose the issue, please let me know.

This is the screenshot when on a different network, where my other device (L530) appears, but the current device does not.
