Model: Deco X55 Pro
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.3.1

A lot of my smart outlets once in idle will become unresponsive, I call for the outlets a second time and it will start working.  It affects a lot of routines/automation to not work.  My Apple TV is the worst nuisance where I cut the Apple TV on it shows that it's connected to the Wi-Fi, but it will not have any signal, I have to go in to Apple TV settings and toggle the WiFi off and back on, then it comes back. It seems that once a device is in idle or off the Deco X55 drops it and it has to be woke up by me manually getting involved.

these devices should be ready available at a moments notice but they are not.
any ideas?

Hey @CRooks,

This in no way is the expected behavior for your network, and your devices should be available immediately.

Can you provide a bit more information about what your network setup looks like?

What routers, switches, or extenders are connected? Where are they connected?

What modem/gateway from your ISP is the Main Deco connected to?

Are you using your Decos in Router Mode or AP Mode?

It does potentially sound like there is either a network loop, or dual NAT setup that may be causing the behavior.

@Riley_S I have cox internet, their modem/router is in bridge mode.  Connected to that is the main T-plink Deco X55 Pro, I live in a three story house with the Main Deco on the middle or main floor, the two satellites are one on the top floor and one on the bottom.

The Decos are running in Router mode not AP.

I do not have any extenders or switches connected, I use to with the old setup I ran before, it was a google mesh router.

I do have an assortment of brands with my smart outlets and switches so I'm not sure if that is causing some compatibility issues.  In the mix I have five TPLink switches/outlets, they respond flawlessly.

On the Deco app it shows everything looks good, in total I have about 50 devices registered to the WiFi, as of right now it shows 30 online and it shows 20 offline. The offline clients are for the most part devices that are powered off including the Apple TV.

I cant remember if I said before, but this Deco router has boosted my WiFi speed tremendously, some places I was only running at 50 Mb where now its close to 400 Mb, I am impressed with it as far as speed goes.

I am by no means an expert, I dont know what a lot of these features do on this Deco app. The IoT for instance, should i create one and put all my outlet and smart switches on that?  The Apple TV is the biggest issue right now because i use it a lot, even if i leave it on it will time out and turn off automatically, but it loses the wifi when it gets turned back on.

sorry for the long write-up

hope this helps.

thank you.

Hey @CRooks,

Thanks for the details.

I think that is is unlikely that your smart devices would cause the behavior other than potentially slowing down the network if they are all communicating at the same time, just as any added wi-fi device would.580ac03d110040a1a94ecad09352c416

IoT Network - This Network has increased compatibility and can be customized separately from your main network. It can help to keep everything on your network organized, but it is by no means required. If you are having difficulties with connecting a device to your main network, the IoT Network can oftentimes make your life easier due to its seperate security settings.

There are a few things that can be done to help improve or fix the behavior:

- Disable the Advanced Features available for the Apple TV in the Deco App - in particular Mesh Technology >>>

- Create an IP reservation for the Apple TV in the Deco App - This will create a guaranteed path for your device to use when it reconnects.

- If the behavior is still not fixed, you should be able to set a Static IP address on your Apple TV using the information in the Decos IP Reservation. This is more unforgiving than an IP Reservation, as it is an absolute path and will not connect any other way.

  @Riley_S

Well that did the trick (knock on wood), I disabled the roaming which makes perfect sense and assigned it to the strongest Deco.  I also looked at a few other devices and noticed i didnt have them on automatic for perferred Deco, maybe this will help.  I really appreciate the responses and the help with troubleshooting my issues.

Thank you Riley,

Hey @CRooks,

Happy to hear that that worked as a fix - the roaming and mesh technology options are typically the culprit, especially for devices that are not expected to move around your home such as Cameras and TVs. The technology is used to automatically provide recommendations and quickly reauthenticate the device's connection so that it can quickly move between nodes. I believe that creating the preferred connection for the device will accomplish largely the same thing, so I think you took care of the problem in two ways.

Let us know if you have any more difficulty!
