Before we even get into how the wiring may work or be set up in this situation, you need to verify that the switch box contains a white neutral wire. As some switches do not require this, it may be stashed in the box and not connected. Please be cautious and use a volt tester as it is not always the case that the white wire is neutral and has no charge.
Most smart switches will require the presence of a neutral wire, as this connection works to regulate the voltage and send extra power back into the system when the switch is provided with too much power, this way the switch will not burn out from overpowering it or surges in power.
