USB Drive Attached to AXE7800 Permissions Error
Hi everyone,
I have a new AXE7800 to which I've attached my USB drive.
I can access the drive through windows and see it. I can create a new folder on the drive.
I can copy files FROM the usb drive to my pc
I cannot copy/paste any files TO the drive at any level.
I get the Error: 'Destination Folder Access Denied' You need permission to perform this action
In my router setup I do have Secure Sharing Ticked and I'm using my admin & password to connect to it.
So strange, can anyone solve this issue?

I suspect a Router Setting on the USB page?
Oddly the Support D/L page does NOT recognize AXE7800, not even with Archer before it?
Suspect you bought this in COSTCO or Best Buy? Both sell it?
I assume you are using Tether to connect ot the settings for USB?
I'd first test with Access Control off. See if that works.
I use Deco as my router is a Deco, and I have it off, but if you want prying eyes not to see the content, then with Access Control on my does default to ADMIN and a default P/W. Possible since you use ADMIN, you didn't change the P/W and SAVE it?
However, normally if you attempt to access something on the LAN without the proper credentials it would have the OS prompt you for the Credentials? Wondering if you entered it wrong one time and it was saved? If using Windows, check the Credential Manager to see if one is save, and then if it was, delete it and try again.
I'd also see if you uncheck the Access Control that you can write to the USB drive (I assume it is not a drive that can be write protected like a Flash drive).

Thank you for your response! I appreciate you trying to help!
I connected the router in windows explorer by entering: \\192.168.0.1 in the address bar
A window popped up asking for credentials so I entered 'admin' and the pw that I created in the router USB Secure sharing section
it connected right away and I can see the drive and all the folders/files in explorer
I can create a new folder on the drive in explorer and even delete the folders I create
I can copy files and folders FROM the drive to my pc
I can copy an empty folder from my PC TO the drive
If I attempt to copy a folder with files TO the drive from my pc, the folder is copied but not the files within it
On my android phone I have a file explorer app that I can do anything (copy/paste/detele/create) with no issues whatsoever
I suspect a Router Setting on the USB page?
- That's what I thought, however I have played with all settings on the USB page, toggling everything on and off to no avail

- yes Costco (listed as AXE 7800/AXE95)
I assume you are using Tether to connect ot the settings for USB?
- I am using the web interface at: http://tplinkwifi.net/ as the Tether app won't let let you access on USB settings (there are none in the app)
I'd first test with Access Control off. See if that works.
- I have toggled 'Secure Sharing on/off'

- I did change my admin passord in Advance>USB Storage>Secure Sharing

Wondering if you entered it wrong one time and it was saved? If using Windows, check the Credential Manager to see if one is save, and then if it was, delete it and try again.
- the crednetials box popped up on first connection to the drive, I entered them and hit remember, drive connected immediately. I have also checked in Windows credentials, and everything matches. I also deleted the entry in windows credentials entirely and re-add --> same issues.
I'd also see if you uncheck the Access Control that you can write to the USB drive (I assume it is not a drive that can be write protected like a Flash drive).
- what setting is this? I dont see 'Access Control' only 'Secure Sharing' which I toggled on/off with no difference

I did find your manual, using the Model Number, see https://static.tp-link.com/upload/manual/2024/202410/20241030/1910013093_Archer%20AXE95_UG_REV1.0.0.pdf
Check Section 5.1, I use a TP-Link ID on all my routers and deco's as well as Tether and Deco apps... That ID will bind to ADMIN?
It appears your problem would be WRITE permissions, but only on the PC?
On my android phone I have a file explorer app that I can do anything (copy/paste/detele/create) with no issues whatsoever

See Section 8.1 of the manual, and does that have any useable clues?
There is a NOTE there that seems odd to me:
==============
Note:
1. For Windows users, do not set the sharing username the same as the Windows username. Otherwise, Windows
credential mechanism may cause the following problems:
• If the sharing password is also the same as the Windows password, authentication will not work since the Windows
will automatically use its account information for USB access.
• If the sharing password is different from the Windows password, the Windows will be unable to remember your
credentials and you will always be required to enter the sharing password for USB access.
2. Due to Windows credential mechanism, you might be unable to access the USB disk after changing Authentication
settings. Please log out from the Windows and try to access again. Or you can change the address of the USB disk
by referring to To Customize the Address of the USB Storage Device.
==============
Even with NO Security enabled?
On my android phone I have a file explorer app that I can do anything (copy/paste/detele/create) with no issues whatsoever
Well, I assume you have a Windows PC, and this sort of points to the problem being a Windows PC problem? I am wondering about not using a TP-Link UID and PW? On that section, only ADMIN has R/W access? However the other is VISITOR and it is READ only? On the Android, do you use a TP-Link UID and P/W?
Oddly the Support D/L page does NOT recognize AXE7800, not even with Archer before it?

Yeah, the 'problem'' is '7800', that is the speed of all the 3 bands combined. AXE95 is the MODEL number... using that as I said, I found the manual.
There is a Quick Install Guide as well, ===> https://static.tp-link.com/upload/manual/2023/202307/20230731/7106510484_Archer%20AXE95(US)_QIG_V1.pdf, and I assume you did follow that.
However with all the data I see now, this could be a Windows permission problem?
Assuming you are on Windows, from a CMD prompt enter NET USE \\TP-SHARE, do you see the share? If so, enter DIR \\TPSHARE and you should see a drive letter...
Like my Windows PC:
==================
C:\>net view \\tp-share
Shared resources at \\tp-share
Share name Type Used as Comment
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G Disk
The command completed successfully.
C:\>dir \\tp-share\g
Volume in drive \\tp-share\g is g
Volume Serial Number is 2C20-1E29
Directory of \\tp-share\g
01/14/2025 07:42 AM <DIR> .
01/14/2025 07:42 AM <DIR> ..
09/02/2024 07:10 AM <DIR> $RECYCLE.BIN
09/02/2024 07:10 AM <DIR> Acronis Backup
09/02/2024 07:10 AM <DIR> asusware
==================
That should work. Now if you do a NET USE x: \\tp-share\g that will make x: (or any other drive letter you use other than x in the command) connect as a drive on your PC. Can you WRITE to the drive that way? I'd suspect you can not if it is a write permission problem.

thank you for all the help,
I can easily connect to the drive, I just cannot write to it
I am using a different password than my windows password, so no issues there.
Using the command prompt, I did all the commands you provided and I get the same results as you. I just still cannot write to this damn drive.
So frustrating

I Googled "windows 11 unable to write to usb drive connected to router" and I found a similar, but old, subject here, https://community.tp-link.com/us/home/forum/topic/262722, but it might not apply, and it doesn't list W11, but it does list W10, and I'd assume they'd be the same. Disk Format in some cases could be the issue? Which makes me wonder, today USB drives do come in large capacities. Wonder if the Router f/w can fully support a large USB drive? I have a 4TB one and it works, but I do recall some issues on 10TB or larger not working? Just a thought. Easy to test. Put a small USB device in, flash drive even, and see if you can write to it? However, since the Android phone can, I may be off-base here?
I did find another OLD one, but TP-Link forum s/w doesn't allow link to non-TP-Link sites, but this was in it:
----------------------------
I found the answer to this issue:
Press Windows key + R
Type: optionalfeatures.exe
Hit Enter
Scroll down to SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support
Tick the SMB 1.0/CIFS Client
Untick SMB 1.0/CIFS Automatic Removal and
Untick SMB 1.0/CIFS Server
----------------------------
These are my settings though:
Again, the one OFF is to be OFF... Server shouldn't matter, either way.
