Security Concern: Unauthorized Replacement of TP-Link Mesh Device

Post Content:

Hello,

I am reaching out to the TP-Link Community with a deeply concerning matter that I hope someone here can help me address. Recently, I purchased a TP-Link mesh network system from Amazon. Initially, both devices in the system were identical and functioned perfectly. However, I later discovered that one of the devices was replaced with a different model.

This discovery is alarming, as it suggests unauthorized physical access to my home. I have reported this incident to law enforcement and my internet service provider (Xfinity), but unfortunately, these avenues have not yielded a resolution.

I am reaching out here because this situation involves potential security risks, and I am hoping TP-Link can provide assistance. Specifically, I would like to know if it is possible to trace the ownership history or other identifying details of the replaced device. This information would greatly assist in resolving this issue.

Your guidance or support in investigating this matter would not only help me but also demonstrate TP-Link’s commitment to customer security and satisfaction.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I appreciate any advice or assistance you can provide.

So you are saying that one Deco unit you had somehow was replaced with another Deco Unit that is NOT the SAME model that your main Deco is, but a different one?

What is the main Deco model and what is the replaced one?

So if the are different (check the label on the bottom) why would your ISP have any info?

if what happened, then someone had to come into your home somehow and swap the unit? Even if they did, why bother? The replaced unit would be putting out your SSID's, not something different?

Even if it were done, what is the Security risk? I personally can't think of one or how, other than someone got into your home and replaced the unit?

Are you sure they were the same when you installed the units from Amazon? Did you verify then? Maybe Amazon shipped you a returned package?

It just doesn't make sense to me? How could swapping a unit make it a security problem? Now if someone came into your home, know the main router P/W and using your Wireless Network SSID's and P/W's (which probably could connect outside the house as well with those) they'd have full access to make changes with the Deco app... why is the reasoning from replacing a Deco Sattelite unit?

I'm more curious over this and how you arrived at this, and as an account Security?

Is it possible:

That someone in the household accidentally damaged a Deco, then tried to replace the unit without your knowledge?
