Model: RE615X
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.9

I wanted a router and range extender that would work together as a mesh.

Two things I wanted to accomplish:

   1) Wired mode (Access Point) for the extender

   2) Wi-Fi 6 network throught the house and yard

I purchased an AXE5400 router and RE615X (AX1800) range extender (Hardware 1.6), and have them both working as a Mesh with the latest firmware on both.

Disappointing things I discovered that are not discussed in the advertising or web pages:

1) I ran an ethernet line out to where I wanted the extender.
It was only then that I discovered that it can't work as a Mesh in Access Point mode.

I had to bring it in a lot closer so it would work in wi-fi mode as a Mesh extender.

2) I got it all set up, and then didn't see wi-fi 6 in the Tether app.

After more investigation, I found out that in Mesh mode, it only works in wi-fi 2.4 and 5, not 6.

These are two of the main reasons that I purchased this combination of TP-Link products, so they would work together as a pair in a mesh network.

Both of these features are heavily advertised, but not the limitations that I described above.

I'm just frustrated that the extender doesn't work with all the advertised features in Mesh mode!

@Greg-Arizona The 615 is advertised as dual band so that tells you it doesn't operate on the 6 Ghz band.  It will run WIFI-6 specs, but that has nothing to do with running on the 6Ghz band.  You need WIFI-6e for that.

@Greg-Arizona Thanks for the response!  Well, if you read their advertising, it says that it does.  And saying "dual band" may be enough for you to know that it doesn't really run WiFi 6, but to me it is very misleading.  Here's exactly what the advertising says: "TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Range Extender with Ethernet Port | Internet Signal Booster for Home | Dual-Band Wireless Repeater Amplifier | Access Point Mode | APP Setup | OneMesh Compatible"

They clearly call it a WiFi 6 range extender right in the heading, and also that it does Access Point Mode.

Nowhere on the site do they say that it doesn't really do WiFi 6, it just says that it does.  Nowhere does it say that Access Point Mode doesn't really work when set up in a mesh, it says that it will do that.  The documentation that comes with it doesn't even say that it won't do those things, you have to figure it out yourself.

It isn't like a salesman told me it would do something that it won't, it is in the manufacturer's printed description.

Sorry if I'm being overly picky, but it sure seems like false advertising to me.

@Greg-Arizona You are confusing WIFI 6 and running on the 6Ghz channel.  They are two different things,it runs the WIFI 6 specs which is using 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands.
