@burdenedbytech Thanks for responding.  Got the bin from the tplink website.  I continued to futz with the router and found that a reset made a download and update possible.  Tried to delete this thread but was apparently too late.

All of this has been set in motion by suddenly having trouble getting computers on the lan connected to my synology.  Trying everything, the update was not a solution.
