I installed the app on my phone and went all the way to connect the RE220 extender . How do I use this now? On my device, I'm still connected to regular WiFi. SHould RE220 show as a new wireless network on my phone? I don't know if I'm getting the benefit of it if I'm just connected to my regular Wifi

You could put RE220 in the halfway between WiFi and dead zone, and see if signal become stronger with RE plugged in, the strong WiFi normally comes from RE. 

Or you could set a different SSID from router  for range extender, so we could distinguish the WiFis coming from router or RE.
