Model: TL-WA850RE
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: wa850rev1_us_3_14_8_up_boot(141224).bin

Just acquired this unit reccently (i know it's old) but is just way too old?  Throughput to Internet is no better than 3Mbps while main router is 200Mbps.

Updated the fw from 2013 to 2014 per ver above but this did not improve throughput.  Signal strength is 80% so it's strong and clients connect - they were intermittent b4 and will see with new fw if that improves, but speed is still throttled across wireless back to main router.  Placement is ok and front of TP faces main router and signal strength 80%.   Is there anything else that can be done, configured or set to help improve this - or something we poss forgot to do - or is this unit just too 2014 and can't do any better as is.

FW VER = 3.14.8 Build 141224 Rel.38157n

HW VER = WA850RE v1.2 00000000

DHCP Server: Auto(Off)

Channel: 8

Wireless Connection: Connected

Signal Received From Main Router/AP: 80%

Wireless Rate To Main Router/AP: 11.0Mbps

Any help or direction is appreciated - seems above states 11 Mbps (is this device max?) - even 11 is better than 3-4 Mbps.

Just trying to get a good normal connection with decent speed out of this RE.  TIA

@phried-wire

The way the extender works is it needs to receive the data and then send the data. When you connect directly to the router, the router does both at the same time which is why it would be faster connecting directly to the router.

In your case, having your devices connect directly to the router would be more beneficial than connecting through the extender.

If you have devices that were further away and got absolutely no signal or the signal was 20% or less, you would place the extender at the halfway point.

So the extender does not always equal boosts in speeds as it works in half-duplex. If a device has slow speeds due to a very weak signal from the router, then expect to see an increase when connecting to the extender.

If the client device gets just as good of a signal from the router as the extender does, then stick to the router.

In general, you can look at around half the speed so if the extender is connected at 11 Mbps then 3 Mbps is about there.

However, if just connecting to the 2.4G, connect your cell phone to the 2.4G and see what link speed it gets, if it's around 11 Mbps then that's prob the best you can get. If the phone gets a higher rate, move the extender closer.
