Model: Archer A7
Hardware Version: V5
Firmware Version: 1.0.14

Hi all,

I have configured WDS using another A7 router by following this faq https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/1555/. Currently I am using two separate SSID's - it is my understanding that I can have the same SSID, but I was wondering how the network would handle switching between devices depending on signal strength? If I am on my extended router, and I move closer to my main router, will I automatically switch to the main router if the signal on the main router is better, or does the switch only happen if the signal is extremely bad on the extended router?

Thank you for the help!

Mostly depends on the device as it selects the band. I prefer separate SSID names as it helps to determine what is going on if an issue occurs and allows me to balance the loads. Sounds like you want it to work like a Mesh system which switches bands more seamlessly.

@ArcherC8 Yep I was considering setting up a mesh system for my next house, this setup is currently for a friend. I didn't know if there was a way to configure this with the default settings, or if I could install some open source firmware to help me accomplish this.

The A7 should allow you to set up OneMesh. See the specs at https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-a7/#specifications and https://www.tp-link.com/us/onemesh/compatibility/.

@ac130 Per this FAQ - https://www.tp-link.com/hu/support/faq/2690/ looks like 2 routers cannot work together for one mesh. Will do some research on whether enabling WDS vs  having other router as an Access Point has better service

I have done some research on One Mesh and Mesh systems as I like to know in advance when it becomes time to replace my non-Mesh router an Archer C8 and RE220 extender. Right now I am leaning toward a Mesh system like the Deco M9. Although I have no experience with One Mesh, the Deco seems like a better way to go even if my current router was One Mesh capable.
