Model: Tapo C425
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.25 Build 250314

I just purchased 4 Tapo C425's for my home. My main reason was to make sure I could identify any cars coming and going from my home (mostly their license plates) as we have had some unidentified vehicles around and some packages have been stolen. Setup and connection to the wifi network went well - strong wifi signals for all cameras. Have set the devices for maximal image quality (2K QHD) at 30 fps. However, the resolution of the videos is awful. The license plates all appear to be blurred - bascially worthless. All of the devices have the upgraded firmware on them. I even held up a box from one of the cameras in front of my front door camera - I was no more than 5-6 feet away, and the print on the box was blurry (the larger letters). Can someone give some suggestions? Am I doing something wrong or are these cameras just not meant to capture that kind of detail?

  @SteveZ28,

While the cameras are only digital zoom and may have difficulties at distance, I would imagine that the image quality should be far better than what I am imagining you are seeing. I would recommend tapping on the camera's live view and seeing that you have selected the Higher Quality (HQ) option for the live view. If it does not help, you may consider bringing down the FPS overall, if possible - it may help reduce the load on the camea and improve its processing power.

If that doesnt improve, I would recommend downloading a video from your SD card, or even removing hte SD card and viewing the video on a PC to see if the quality in the livestream aligns with the quality being recorded.

Lastly, double check that no condensation had formed on the lens when installing, and that any protective films have been removed (you would be surprised at how many people have left it on)

  @Riley_S - live view is at 2K QHD. I tried capturing video at 15 fps and 30 fps while backing my car up to the camera and then pulling away. The plate is quite clear when you are very close to the camera (5-6 ft). As I start pulling away from the camera the resolution gets worse and by around 10 ft I can't make out the plate anymore. This occurs both when viewing the video on the camera and when I download the video to my phone. I have not tried to remove the MicroSD card and play it on my laptop - but unsure why this would be any different from downloading the video from the camera to my phone and then viewing it on my laptop (I guess I would ask if the size or quality of the video is degraded when you download it from the camera to your phone?). There is no condensation on the lens and the protective film was removed previously.

Not sure where to go from here. Do you have any further suggestions? My thought would be to purchase a 4K camera and try that in the same location to see if there is an improvement.

Thank you,

Steve
