Model: Archer AXE5400
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

My Nighthawk router has started acting flaky (needing to reboot several times a day, so I decided to replace it and upgrade my Wifi at the same time. So I bought a Deco AXE5400 router and AXE5400 Pro Mesh systems. The router installed easily with no difficulties. Can't say that about the Mesh system. I had two extenders on my Netgear setup and figured I would need the same here. Reading on the box I assumed that this mesh setup would give me the same functions with longer range on the extenders.

I guess my next question is will what I bought give what I am after? The two extenders are about 50' from the router. Anyway, onto mesh setup. I find these mesh devices can only be set using an app on a smart phone and no other way. I have a Galaxy S22 so I am covered there. I did finally get the phone's Bluetooth to connect to the mesh unit sitting in front of me connected to the router. But I can't do anything more, the blue light is blinking on the unit. According to online docs (that say this is very easy, but it isn't the first time) this is all I need. Now what, what am I missing? The router still does not see it.

My end goal is to have a router with two extenders for equipment that is roughly 50' away. Did I buy the right products? Or do I have the right stuff and just confused about how to finish?

One last question not well explained in the docs. Do I need one of these mesh devices located at the router also? Or can it handle mesh by itself?

First off let me say I do not have a MESH system as I do not need one but did a lot of research on MESH a while back.

There are several types of MESH systems Each vendor and even within a vendor there are different MESH systems. TP Link has ONE MESH and EASY MESH and they are different. They do not work with each other nor with other vendor's MESH systems.

The mesh units do not need to be right next to the router but do need to be where they get a good signal much like an extender. MESH systems should give you better coverage and throughput than using an Extender due to the back haul. If speed is required, than MESH is better than Extenders. If coverage is more important, placement is key for both.

When setting them up, do it next to the router before placing them in the final location.

I did use an Extender for a while to cover my detached garage but when I upgraded my router I found I no longer needed it. I do have IoT devices more than 50 feet away on 2.4 guest network as the 2.4 network has more reach.  I found minor changes in height, placement, and direction pointed of the router makes a difference. I may be giving up a bit of speed in the outer areas of my home but I am fine with that as I do not need Extenders or a MESH in my network.

@martinstacy Decos use a Deco Mesh system, where as the Archer uses EasyMesh.  If you want to use the Decos, I would return the Archer and get more Decos.  If you like the Archer, return the Decos and an Extender that supports EasyMesh.
